all other gears seam fine.... alothow there is a slight knockin soudn cumin from the rear end with clutch in or out at any speed. Any ideas?

well i thinks i may have stripped sum teeth off the reverse gear. sound likley to those who have dun it before? im gussin my options are...New box...reco box....or get rid of the lux altoghter!!!
bawsiclly how much are they worth 2nd hand and new.and where should i start lookin for a gearbox?

sounds more like you've knocked half a tooth off your differential crownwheel.

jack up the back and turn the wheels while an assistant holds the tailshaft. if you can feel the notchiness in the wheels/tailshaft, drop the diff oil, if the diff is broken there will be pieces of tooth stuck to the magnet in the drain plug.

you should be able to pick up a diff from someone on this board for anything from $100 to $500, otherwise to have yours rebuilt with new gears is around $700 and up.

cheers

if the problem was in the diff wouldnt it be happening in forward gears aswell?? he says its only in reverse and that all other gears seem fine, that would pretty much pinpoint the problem to the reverse gears in the box...

yer and when we loaded it up in the servo (ie put it in gear and let clutch out while on the breaks) the noise happened and the tailshaft wasnt spinning, :?

just drain the gearbox oil, and if theres anything broken, it SHOULD come out in the oil, if not, take your chances, and strip down your box

well yeah its just revrese... ive made sum inquires into a 2nd hand box.... mite go with this option. also if i do change it is it worth fixing any other problems while its all out...like rear main seal? and service or even purchase a new t/c with geras etc ?

normally I'd agree, but he says:

all other gears seam fine.... alothow there is a slight knockin soudn cumin from the rear end with clutch in or out at any speed.

which leads me to believe he's knocked the overdrive side off a couple of crownwheel teeth and the clunking is so far only very pronounced in reverse.

if thjere are reverse teeth busted off in the gearbox some of them will be attached to the drain plug magnet. since the W and G series gearboxes used in hiluxes do not have a constant mesh reverse idler gear, if the problem was with reverse there should be no noises in forward gears.

I could be wrong. its cheap and easy to check the diff before dropping the gearbox on suspicion

cheers

ok, now that sounds like a broken reverse gear bits.

drop the gearbox oil, look for chunks.
