Hey guys. I am in the process of seeing my yota for a gq. So far the advise I have been given is to pick up a 4.2 petrol either on gas or convert it to straight gas and turbo it. but what i want to know is how well does this motor take to water and how extensively do i have to water proof it. I did a serch. Read a few things on leads. But still un aware how to use the new forums search function properly.
Both previous fourby I've had have been diesel. So ive not had to worry to much.

Re: 4.2l petty vs water
few mates have them, there a pretty good with water, make sure you got diff breathers which they should, only drama these wont be as economical as ya previous diesel were but will have some balls turboed
Re: 4.2l petty vs water
That's why I've been told to run straight gas. Use a large gas tank and a subbi. Or i was thinking two large tanks. I eventually plan to dual cab ute it so room wont be as much of an issue. I have a mate that was suggesting a wax product that is for warerproofing dizzys. So it seams to me there is a pretty good way to water proof nearly everything.
Breathers are pretty standard thing to have to extend. Although what are the patrols gear box breathers like? As in how hard to access. Is there one for gbox and one for transfer case. Or one for both? Is there enough room between box and floor of the body to get your hand up there and get a hose on it?

Re: 4.2l petty vs water
hey yer the tb42's are pritty good for water. i havnt had issues with mine. Just make sure your snorkle is all water tight. Breathers are easy to get to my patrol had all breathers fitted from factory not sure if all do. they are just rubber hose and then steel line running along the chassis rail and then up into the passenger front gaurd.
Re: 4.2l petty vs water
Its possible to make them pretty water proof. I have pretty much waterproofed mine now but remember simple things like faulty leads can cause major issues. Wasted ages of time thinking new leads be waterproof.
Re: 4.2l petty vs water
got mine pretty water proof ive had water over the bonnet. it has factory diff breathers, good snorkel set up, good leads, when i fit the leads i put a big blob of lanoline grease in either end then push them on nice and tight gives you a seal and previous owner fitted up an air horn compressor to the dizzy that you jus switch on n pressurise the dizzy.

Re: 4.2l petty vs water
My old Mav's loved water didn't affect the dizzy one bit but i had it converted from Points to a Crane Cam Fireball Infra Red pickup installed. I had no breathers or water proofing done to the dizzy and i have a video of it going through deep water and not even flinching
