split transfer case teardown - next question..

Hey guys,

Started tearing down the spare manual shift transfer case I got off Ricko this arvo and go as far as removing the bearing the gearbox output.

I have a gear puller and tried using it but wasn't sure how much I could tighten it, as I dont want to bust anything. I was hoping I could pull on the gear enough to pop the bearing off.

Heres my setup:

The vice grips help me turn down the main shaft of the puller.

Any tips appreciated, as this has me stopped so far.

Thanks to Ray for this tip... use a rattle gun!

Did this without the vice grips and it come off without any problems.

should always use a rattle gun or air ratchet. Using a spanner or socket wrench just twists the puller off the gear and shaft. The gears, bearings and shafts are all hardened too, so the puller will break long before anything else.

If it doesnt want to come out, how do you remove it? I can't see anything in my FSM that suggests the best way to get it out.

On one of the cases it came out without any effort. On the other its firmly in there and I've attempted tapping the shift fork with a rubber mallet to try and drive this part out from behind.

Any tips would be appreciated.

when i did mine i used a slide hammer

got it off but had to persist with the rubber mallet on the 2wd/4wd shift rod.

I borrowed some multigrips and a slide hammer off of ray but the inside edge was rounded and the slide hammer couldn't catch onto anything. when using the multigrips it was stuck solid and I couldn't budge it.

Now to practise run to rebuild the transfer!

Just make sure you check the main transfer drive gear and output shaft for wear you can buy a modified gear for this if it is worn.
