105 Vs 200 cruisers
The mrs is preggers again (#3) and we need to upgrade her magna to a cruiser. Was gonna do it sometime, just brought forward. Looking at a post '04 105 cruiser (low km) or 200 cruiser. I want diesel. Basically, I'm working away 5 days/week, and want something reliable for the mrs & kiddies, but something I can play with when home. She does a fair bit of travel (60km between towns a few times per week) The 200 will probably be Kinetic suspension, the 105 so it doesn't have IFS. Not too fussed if the 105 is man/auto
What issues will I face with either? I spoke to a local Toyota car yard today, and he reckons they only get a decent 100 series cruiser every few months. Had a look at a few other yards and they're high km, petrol, or too old. Didn't see a single diesel in my criteria. Are they out there, or are people literally hanging on to them?

Mate, people tend to hang on to them with a death grip if they are diesel. Up here in Nth QLD I have seen 200 Series diesels (only 2 of them) for sale with 100K km on them for mid $60K at car yards. The big step up from the 105 to the 200 in price has also meant that the 105 diesel is a very much sought after vehicle as well. Everyone knows the car yards won't give you the best price for it on a trade-in, even though they are a quick moving vehicle, and sell them privately where they can generally get a premium price.

People perceive the new 200 series as being heavy, weak and overly complicated giving it an image of being unreliable. Being expensive doesn't help either. What this has done is increase the selling price of second hand 100's as people are holding on to them for longer.
In my opinion, if you have a diesel 100 and can afford a 200 sell the 100 and buy the 200. The 200's have the strongest chassis Toyota has ever put into a Landcruiser and the initial problems they encountered (fuel pumps, burning oil, blowing engines) seem to have been ironed out. + They are cavernous inside, great for the 5+ kids you'll have

The only reason people buy 105's are for the solid axle. Some say they are stronger than the IFS, but it's hard to push that story when you're on the side of the road with a broken gearbox, or int he bush with a busted front diff
There's quite a price difference between a 200 and 105 too. What about a turbo diesel 100? Will be cheaper than a 200, 'apparently' more reliable than a 200 (though haven't heard of anyone breaking a 200)

1hz with r150 gearbox + turbo = BOOM
its not that cheap better off with a factory turbo 100and putting up with ifs for what you are going to do

Im driving around in a TD100 series, and the IFS hasnt slowed me down offroad- (Not having twin diff locks has tho!) I recon that by the time i reach the limit of a locked 100 series and would be contemplating a solid axle one, i'd be doing panel damage.
Compared to a 105 series, you get so, so much more with a 100 series TD, and at about $30K less than a low km 200 series.

1HD-FTE motor vs the 1HZzzzzzz
H151F gearbox vs R151F (which explodes)
MUCH better road manners (important if your missus is driving it most of the time)
Remote central locking
Power windows on all doors
Nicer interior- although with kids, this could be a downside. Lot more cloth in a GXL 100 series vs Pov Pack 105.
There are a few issues, but most fixes have been worked out for them now
Front diff is weak too- Known issue, Fitting a solid pinion spacer and an Airlocker go a long way to strengthening it. But you can blow up a patrol diff with enough mistreatment too (Trust me, we did one at work!)
Front A Arms- They have a history of cracking. $24 at ARB and about 3hrs of work and some time with a MIG will strengthen em right up.
Turbo diesel only- Fan has been known to torque forward and much the radiator when submerged. Fix is to get the fan off a late HDJ80 and fit that up.
Get a post Sept 05 100 tho- then you get the standard rear aircon, LED tail lights, Polycarbonate headlights and standard alloys (tho they are 17") Otherwise to get rear aircon, your looking Sahara spec.
Compared to a 105 series, you get so, so much more with a 100 series TD, and at about $30K less than a low km 200 series.

Cheers guys, have seen a few 100/105's on car sales and other sites, but I don't recall any of them being in WA (6ish months ago).
For the price of some, well, a hell of a lot, I'm considering new, the price difference wasn't that much between last and current models. Some 2nd hand 200's were less than their 100/105 counterparts
I assume price for transport from eastern states to WA would be rather costly. Has anyone paid for it or know the approx price?

I'd go a HDJ100R, excellent vehicles imo. Did some work on a 200 series Sahara the other day, I still don't trust them yet and they are also a very complex vehicle compared to previous models. That said they have a huge interior and plenty of power.
