You can datalog more with EFI live or HP tuners from the stock ECU/PCM than any aftermarket ECU. I run a Custom operating system 2 BAR MAP TO4ZR roller turbo on my Gen 3 and it is excellent. I do all my tuning with EFI live and in reality the software is miles ahead of anything aftermarket.

i also have been watching this subject for a fair while now. There is a few threads on this conversion and i believe in one of them there was a figure of 15-17k put out there, i am also pretty sure that was for a GQ im not sure if the cost is different for a GU

In my opinion yes the factory computer can give you the same HP, as long as you get a good tuner.
And the good part is you still keep all the factory settings for start up, idle control, cold start enrichment, etc So it will start and run just like any commodore on the road. If you are happy with what you got now i wouldn't change it, But if you were doing a conversion from scratch, go factory ECU.

whilst i do love stock computers(my 1300hp falcon runs stock computer still) im running a link or vipec on my ls1, main reason being the digital dash's (one for driver one for navi) a good tuner should be able to get start up fueling and all that the same as factory, its just easier with stock cause its already their,
the only problem with falcon comeputers is the lengthy time of tuning cause its not real time, i know their is real time software available for these but its no where near as good as the sct stuff,

i believe ill also have the ability to alter the tune from the dash so if something happens in a race eg bad fuel or loss of fuel pressure we could slow down and pull a couple of degreas of timing out, i know this is a far out situation but when you drive from townsville to alice springs i wanna be prepared for everything,
we will do very very little tuning for mine on the dyno. mostly on a track

Starting at around $14-$15000 for a LS1, Around $18-$20000 for a 6.0L depending on trans, etc

steve, a quick question for you. What is the cause of the big jump in price between the LS1 and a L98. I know it costs extra for the L98 itself and mod to fly by wire throttle, but i can not see where the 4-5K price jump is.

im not having a go at your pricing at all i just am curious to see what i have missed

i think there is a bit involved in the pedal assembly, if you were to go an aftermarket computer you can go to a cable throttle on the l98 and alot more simple to wire up imo

Hey, main price difference is the motor, 6L being around $6000, LS1 around $2500.
And then there is extra work in the wiring, mounting pedal, etc

They are only ballpark figures, and I do quote each job depending on engine/trans choice

yea i was told about being able to change to cable throttle but was told there was alot of shit then that had to be changed or replaced (knock sensors is all that comes to mind atm) but maybe thats what you mean by aftermarket computer maybe that problem is easily resolved. And steve i had no idea the LS1 was so cheap, i thought it was closer to 4K and 6K for the L98 was what i was expecting.

Wouldn't it be great to get two similar vehicles with similar running gear, suspension and tire size etc where they had the two different motors (same mods, tune or exhaust etc) for a comparison.

THe LS1 is a Generation 3 engine and 5.7L. Ive paid as little as 1k for a decent LS1.

The L98 is a Generation 4 engine and 6L and uses L92 Heads (they are awesome) . Were 4k new for a bit. Harder to find now.

The LS2 is a Generation 4 Engine but used LS6 (gen3) heads and slightly higher compression. Its 6L. From 4.5k but not as good as a L98 due to heads.

The LS3 is a Generation 4 engine with larger bores, Gen4 heads and 6.2L capacity. HUGE potential but expensive. Try Sonny @ Marrano's in Sydney for them.

ALL will work on either cable or Electronic throttles. Harnesses do change around a lot as knock sensors etc have moves, Displacement on demand is in the early L98's (Called L76 in the VZ but wasnt activated) then was removed for a while and returned in the later VE's.

The Factory computer is good for well over 1000hp and more, has full logging capability's and even has tables for NOS, Boost enrichment etc.
