2000 GU Patrol Dual Fuel HELP/ADVICE on gas system

Post by leahcj89 »

Hello everyone,
I have a 2000 model Patrol that is gas converted with an inco gas system. It is the 4500 ST manual. I have had the car for about six months now and tow a horse float with it. I have been very disappointed in the performance of the car both towing and general driving, and after some research I have decided that it is definitely not running properly. The fuel consumption is awful...i get about 300kms to the 90L gas tank AT BEST and the average fuel is about 270km for the tank. With towing down to 200km per tank. It runs very sluggish and has alot of trouble getting up hills. The car has a 3 inch lift kit in it also which i know can effect its power, and also has 285 33 inch tyres on it (cooper discoverers).

I would like to know if anyone could suggest a good reputable mechanic that specialises in gas systems and has experience in working with the patrols, I am in geelong area so even melbourne would be fine. I want the car tuned to run as best as it can on gas with a bit more grunt and better fuel consumption. Can anyone help??? Thanks!

I cant help with the gas or tunning of the vehicle but i can tell you I have the 2001 ST petrol and run both a set of 31" A/Ts for road and 33" M/Ts for play. The difference on road is at least one gear. I can acclerate up hills in 5th with the 31's the 33's need to drop a gear, having said that being able to accelerate up any hill in 4th or 5th is preety impressive in my book. I average 17L per hundred carful driving and 20L if i get heavey with the right boot petrol only.

Thanks for that, yeah I have thought about getting the smaller tyres but because it has the lift it makes it hard. I am gettin around 30L per 100 which just seems ridiculous!

If you run premium when on petrol you can add some timing that will help with power and economy. A wire in chip allows for timing remapping that will help performance and economy moreso. Extractors, exhaust cold air intake/snorkel, anything that raises efficiency can add power and economy. Ideally you need a dyno to get the best performance, unfortunatly our new dyno is 4 weeks from installation.

Has your fuel consumption and power been the same since you first bought the car?? Is your fuel tank standard 30 or 35L??
I have a 98 TI 4.5 auto with direct injection gas. It runs duel fuel. Running 33's.
I get around 300kms out of my 90L gas and around the same out of my 80L long range sub fuel tank. That gives me around 600kms total. A little better when cruising at highway speed.
Its running a little ruff and needs plugs and leads which will hopefully help.

from what ive heard, all 4.5s were low on power, my 4.8 is awesome power wise but yes it drinks fuel, obviously your not happy with your vehicle so id suggest what it is your after, more power or better economy???? more power go 4.8, want economy go a 4.2td

My 4.5 when standard never got over 300 K's to a tank of LPG. Installing iridium plugs and an sports exhaust with extractors gave me extra 30-40 K's. But by far the best decision I made was throwing the old mixer system gas and installing gas injection. Heaps more power and was getting 400 K's every fill. Oh and with the 35" tyres was pointless trying to work it out, I useto take 2 jerries on long off road trips to top up the sub tank if needed.
