40 series flex.
Would like to see the amount of flex that people are getting from various aftermarket leafs and different set ups (SOA, reversed shackles).
Also, for those people who have done a coil conversion (three link & four link), what is it like on the road and how is the stability vs leafs?
Just getting some ideas before I start working on my 40, as I dont want to spend lots of $$$ on leafs then decide i want coils.

1340mm (52.8") long rear leafs (about 7.8" longer then std.)

12" travel bilstein 5125s all round

Rear diff back 5" from standard, front forward 1"

can i ask how hard is it to replace the springs if the break i.e. invert? i guess this is more directed to you twisty as your springs sound custom made, and if i can ask how much?

Not sure exactly what you mean sorry mate with the breaking/inverting. At the time my custom set of springs cost $1200 from Dobinsons Springs in Rockhampton.

hey twisty,
not so much the shack (but i guess that will happen too) but more the spring,
ive got a mate from melbourne who constantly kept bending the springs, (bending them up = inverting) well thats what i called it, but every time this happend it took weeks to get make a new one, and had to get it done somewhere out of town,
p.s. im in bundy, any problems with this???

inverting shackles is incorrect spring and/or shackle length. a quick fix is anti-inversion shackles but they don't fix the real issue.loosecanon wrote:hey twisty,

Damn, all these epic flexing Brisbane-based 40 series are pretty damn inspiring.
I've got a mate who is losing the love for his 40 series after picking up a TD 80 series and it makes me sad.

As Shorty mentioend, he shouldnt be bending springs that easily. Something else must be wrong with his setup. I imagine any custom spring setup would have some wait to get replacements for if you did bend them.loosecanon wrote:hey twisty,

Only way I can see the springs bending on my setup is the shackles hitting something hard then bending the springs. But I know they hang down low so try to drive accordingly.

sorry to hi-jack, but im almost at suspension stage now and i wanna get it right first time, who would you recommend seeing in briz about suspension, i finaly found fourby's in brisbane and they were pretty help full,(mine is a buil from stratch so the whole set can be done,

none of the setups shown are "off the shelf". They are all custom. I doubt you will find anyone in Brisbane or in Australia who will sell you what is shown in the above cars. You can do what twisty did and get custom springs made or just do what everyone else did and mix and match toyota leaves. But you won't buy a complete ready made bolt in kit that flexes like the ones shown.

What lift is required to run 33's and how high for 35's, assuming i extend the wheelbase ~5in
Also I will be going for a 350 chev at this stage with a 5 speed box and gear driven transfer.
What should I do to the diffs to handle the extra power?
If I were to go for a disc brake setup would it be easier/cheaper to go for a set of 80 series diffs?

if ur sticking with leave's id put a ladder bar on it otherwise u would probably get to much axle wrap and chew out your pinion's

Maybe spring works at Bowen hills quoted me $85 per individual leaf for custom ones about two weeks ago to give you an idea on price

I have Dobinson's in mine (got them off Dave when he got his new ones) Plus I have extended shackles.
Not as much flex as twisty's but ok all the same. I still have to extend the rear stops to make that end work properly.
After owning these I would'nt go back to a set of off the shelf springs. They ride better & flex better, they have however
dropped a bit in the arse end but I'll reset them one day my self.

Hey guys heres my daily driver swb it sits on 35'' tyres with old 2nd hand stock 80 coils with long travel shocks
no sway bars and a xlink to allow the front end to flex.
The rear end is 80 series 4 link with panhard and at front ,80 arms flipped for ground clearance purposes only otherwise stock 80 set up.
On road driving it normal its like a stock 80, drive it wild/ hard and it bucks twist sways rolls and leans , fun for the driver -scary for the onlooker /passenger
It would be changed by just with fitting sway bars and changing the shocks im using, but all in all im happy with it as is
off road its great the suspension does all the work wich i wanted ,plus the coils give a comfy ride too ,i wanted it low wide n flexible and im happy with it

If you can do a bit of welding/fabbing ect yourself, AFAIK all you'll need to buy are a pair of complete 80's diffs from the wreckers or from on here, they come up from time to time.
As a rough guide, my local wreckers were asking $800 for a pair of complete 60 diffs.
But ask Plowy, something tells me he's probably got a better idea

you'd be better off getting hold of a complete rolling chassis and that way you can get all of the links, radius arms, coil mounts, steering etc. It will be a lot easier to install and a lot easier to engineer using all factory gear.
