front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
hi guys,
ive got a 97 solid axle dual cab lux with a 2.8 diesel...
was out today having a drive and i heard a fan belt noise, i pulled over and checked and couldnt see any thing... 3 minutes up the road i was coming round a left bend and the right front wheel locked up nearlly putting me into a wall... after disengaging the front hubs i tryed moving it out of the middle of the track... i saw the wheel skiding from out the window...it made a grinding poping noise then was fine... i pulled off the track had a look but couldnt see anything... the axle was hot enough to nearlly burn my hand... i waited bout 10 mins to let cool down and made it home with no problem and with 5 minute checks... it did cool down heaps by the time i got home...
wat could be wrong... it didnt make a noise on the way home... is it a bearing or something...
thanks andy

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
yes it is a bearing or something.
the wheel bearings have seized up solid, the pop would have been some part of the bearing breaking. If you are lucky, you wont have too much damage to other components, but it is likely you will have a damaged spindle, thrust washer and probably lock nuts too.
dont drive it anywhere until it is fixed, if it seizes again while you are on the road, the result could be disasterous for other people too, not just you.

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
thanks heaps... well i dont know if i should thank you but thank you anyway...lol...
Is it an easy fix as ive read on the forums about rebuilding the bearings or is there to much damage and should i leave it to my mechanic... i dont want to pull it apart then have to truck it to the mechanics...

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
Its a bit like the old 'how long is a piece of string" question, how hard it is depends on your skills as a mechanic. It would need to be pulled apart, assess what is damaged, get new parts and repair. It is a dirty job, it is not overly technical, but it is important to get it right.

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
Its not really that hard to replace wheel bearings, its just a dirty job.
If you have any mechanical knowledge, and the right tools, then you should be able to knock over the job in a couple of hours.
I had a wheel bearing explode while I was doing 100kms along the freeway, I was very lucky I didnt crash into the car next to me.
I managed to limp it home, it took about 4hours to drive around 20kms.
Theres lots of info in the Hilux bible, and thered be lots of info somewhere in the Yota Tech section, just do a search for wheel bearing fail, or something like that.
Just make sure you have the correct tools for the job, the correct grease, and lots of rags.

Grab yourself a workshop manual. If you have the tools and someone to show you how to do it you can save a heap.

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
Do a real good search on here, look through the Lux bible too.
If you have the right tools, and plenty of rags, you should be able to do both sides in 1 day.
When I did mine for the first time, I had no idea what I was doing, I spent a weekend doing them.
Get yourself a set of wheel bearings, a front axle rebuild kit, some Hi temp wheel bearing grease and lots of rags.
As for tools, youll need a floor jack, jack stands, wheel brace, 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 54mm hub socket, circlip pliers, flathead screwdriver, 17mm socket and a owners manual. I think thats pretty much it.
Just a few things to remember though.
Make sure you buy the correct grease.
Make sure you pack the grease into the new wheel bearings correctly.
Dont pull the locking hub springs out, they are a bastard to put back in.
Its not a hard job and anyone can do it in their shed with the right tools.
But as your bearing is seized, you might want to get yourself a set of stub axles, just in case. When my wheel bearings exploded, the heat caused by me driving home on it(even though I was doing about 10kms an hour), the bearing race had welded itself to the stub axle.
Other than that, if you need more info, you only have to ask here.
By the way, theres a thread I posted in the Hilux Bible about rebuilding the front axle, it has a link to a site that has step by step with pics, so you cant go wrong.
The rear axle, I would pay someone to do, as its a bitch of a job.
Good luck.

nah rear is fine, less stages than fronts, the trick is to be not too kind lol. I remember reading about getting a lump of timber and dropping your axle onto it from over your head to remove the bearing. it does work but you have to give it hell. I was too worried that i was doing it wrong. in a way i was as i got angry and it came straight off.DUDELUX wrote:Do a real good search on here, look through the Lux bible too.

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
The hardest part can be getting everything apart. If it gets too hot the bearing nuts will practically weld together and onto the spindle. You might need a decent socket to get the nuts off and worse case an oxy for some heat. the 20 dollar ebay sockets aren't very good for that kind of work. Another handy tool is a thread file to clean up the spindle thread.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
got a call from the mechanic... its the right locking hub, if i've said it right...
can save the bearings till after the wedding and do all 4 on my 4 days off... should be enough time...
might have to get a few tools and a work shop manual..
is there any diffrence between brands of work shop manuals? as some are bigger than others... all same price (about $42 at super cheap) but 1 is quite a lot fatter... which is the best brand?... and most detailed?...as it all helps...

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
i cant see how a locking hub can cause this?
the wheels spins on bearings and either connects to the locking hub or doesnt, if it does then the axle will also turn. as long as the diff center is ok then this wont lock up your front end.

Re: front right wheel seizure... wats wrong
Try getting a price on a genuine workshop manual. I know from experience that Toyota sells them very close to cost price so it's not too expensive and it's genuine... can't get much better than that.aaannddyyy wrote:got a call from the mechanic... its the right locking hub, if i've said it right...

Here the thread I posted into the Hilux Bible.
Its got a link to a 4x4wire page, that has step by step, with pics.

Print it out, and you wont go wrong.
I had it next to me while I was doing mine for the first time.
Its not really that hard to do.
