1VD FTE vs LS1/2/3 which would you choose?
So with one of these two conversions kicking around in my head for my 80 series I was wondering which of these would you chose if you had the choice? There are pros/cons for both. If you could get your hands on either a wrecked hsv/ss or a cruiser ute which one would you install and why? Take your needs of your car into consideration when answering.

the only 1vd you will get to work is from a ute = Grimace
my vote is if you want a deisel put a 1hdfte in it or a duramax

Probably the Chev.
Slots in easily enough into the 80 up against the toyota auto trans
makes ok power/torque stock and at a low rpm, but the potential and ease to make a whole lot more is there
Not really that thirsty when driven normally.
Nicer to drive like petrols are compared to diesels. Quieter, smoother, nice high rpm for gunning it.
I get off on sniffing the petrol fumes when filling it up.

Yeh i know what you mean of the smell of petrol i sold off me maloo to get the 80..i know the potential of the LS motors after tricking mine up and getting 489rwhp (cam only) out of her, i also know and haven't forgotten how much she liked a drink too....
anyways i've done a fair bit of research of the two conversions and have leaned towards the LS one but have drifted towards the 1VD now. The 1HD isn't out of the question either....if i can get some average fuel usage figures for the LS motor this would prob seal the deal if they're not too bad..

The ls should be slightly better than a 1fz. ...........but atleast you will get to the next servo alot quicker

I have read that it's slightly better than the 1fz.
A 1hd wouldn't be much different to a 1vd, only that it would be a bit easier to put in with your current gearbox.
The other more realistic for me option i'm thinking of is a 1fz rebuild and supercharger. It's alot simpler and cheaper to do and keeps it mostly toyota parts. A rebuild alone should give me back about 20-30kw wich is what i rekon it's lost in it's 377,000km life. The potential for alot of power is there like a chev but i think it's probably not necessary. Given my suspension setup a 500hp v8 is not really useable or even safe on the street.

Its alot better fella's depending on how you drive. At first I was getting average fuel eco by booting it everywhere. But on long highway runs mine used stuff all fuel with a maffless tune and leaned out. Only under hard acceleration are you using heaps. In the end I only had to sqeeze the pedal until you feel it pulling and just hold it there until you reach your desired speed (fast). I avereaged about 15 - 16 per 100 for 320hp. But it will be more like 18 - 19 for the first 6 months .

I get approx 6km/L from a L98 and 6l80e in my 80 series.
Would not go with the 1vd, everything I have heard is they are very over rated, and un reliable. How do you like 10-20 hrs to change a starter motor??
I would go the L98, or a duramax if budget allows, 400HP and 12L per 100

go the chev cheap on parts plenty of spares/ performance parts, std computer is very programmable at most dyno places. Great power too.

1HD-FTE. Brilliant motor out of the box, Absolute stonker with a chip and exhaust.
About the only thing the 1VD has over teh 1HD is the way it comes on torque down low- ive got a work truck with the 1VD and it will just idle up things in high range offroad, and in low range its pretty much unstoppable!

the duramax engines (LMM,LB7) are quite impressive thats for sure. Since i've been in Vancouver and seeing how effortlessly the motors push the big rigs along it's hard to not think about getting my grubby hands on one..... they're a big motor though and quite heavy hhhmmmm. Parts would be the only thing that would slow me down with this transplant conversion.
Killalux i see your using the bigger GM gearbox mate, i guess this would've been an easier option than using the standard cruiser auto gearbox and getting the two different modules to talk to each other. Are you happy with the setup?? i guess you'd be hard pressed not to be ay...

Who tuned your maloo? Dan @ Chipmaster or someone else. I have a supercharged 408 stroker than uses less than 18k/100k. When cruising i can get around 11/100. Around town 14-15. Once you have driven a LS1 powered 4x4 you will wonder why you didnt do it a lot earlier.

The duramax is quite bulky yes, But it will fit with a 2" body lift. Weight is not too much of an issue, they are only maybe 100kg heavier than a 1HD. We have done a few patrols with them now and in my opinion is easily worth spending the extra dollars.
There is a kit to bolt the allison auto to the cruiser transfer case being designed now.
Yes using the GM gearbox is a much better option than the cruiser auto. It is perfectly matched for the higher revving LS, And don't have dramas trying to make things talk to each other.
You could just buy my truck instead of converting yours

Voodoo, i had Eddie @ Active Automotive do all the work over in Perth. I personally could have driven it a little nicer and got a bit better economy out of her but she was too much fun to drive. He was excellent to deal with and his work was top notch. Recommend him to everyone...
Steve, buying your would be the easiest and most likely the cheapest option mate, but then wheres the fun in that???
