MQ knuckle swap help (clearance issues???)

Post by patrol_maverick »

I started fitting some MQ knuckles the the GQ today, basically just a mock-up to see what fits.
How do you fix the clearance problems between the panhard rod and the MQ drag link? The drag link is directly inline with the panhard chassis bracket, so at full upward travel will they hit or will the diff swing forward enough for them to clear? Do I need to refit my old control arm spacers?
I've read some other threads and there is no good description/ picts for fixing the clearance issues, although those trucks had 5-linked fronts and I've got Flex arms.

I'm also going to put the draglink above the knuckles and will need them reamed at the top, so will the taper on the under side need to be filled somehow, or just get the top reamed only?

There is also mention of offset knuckle bearings on another thread, are they really needed? It looks ok as it is.

Here's some picts so far:

is that a wear mark on the front of the diff housing from the panhard hitting when you had the spacers in?

The mark is a gouge and I think it's from the large nut on an adjustable panhard rod. I was given the strengthened housing from someone doing a GU front end swap, and I'm pretty sure the mark was there when I got it. I don't have adjustables and I can't see anything on my truck that would leave a gouge in that spot. It's deeper than just a wear mark.

yeah, not alot of room with an adjustable panhard and steering. what about getting a new drag link made up with a bend to clear the panhard mount? surely if it was out of 6mm wall it would be strong enough.

I though about that, but you loose even more front clearance.Doing the MQ swap gives you an extra 100mm clearance under the tie rod, but you loose clearance in front of the diff, so still not sure if it's a worthwhile mod.

yeah looking at the front of mine, i can't see how you could do it without doing a triangulated 4 link. Bummer!

A 4-link front and rear would be nice but too much work.
