Engine Conversion 2.8 to TD4.2

Post by Sharp »

Hi All
Have a 2000 GU Wagon with a blown head (totally stuffed motor) looking at upgrading to TD42 out of a 03 to 05 model maybe, All my mates are saying fit a 4.2. Question is has anyone actually done one of these conversion and how difficult was it to do because if it is really a bit_h I will take the easy street and fit 2.8 recon, am interested in some of the feed back on some of the problems you had and how much you had to change over on the vehicle
Need some convincing that this is good option
Thanks Guys

I’ve done searches it led me here to this website; I am still looking through other sites and get a lot of my mate has done one.
What I would like is a reply from someone who has done one and has the experience and knowledge. Things they needed to change over like do you need to change the dash, driveshafts and diffs etc. Would like to hear from anyone who done one and has the experience in going the swop over.

Ok im feeling happy. You dnt need to change the dash but would make it easier, you need to cut off the 2.8 mounts off the chassie nd fab new ones to suit the 4.2, you need a new complete engine and gear box and cross member and front n rear drive shafts and new radiator, diffs are good as there 4.6s factory but would need 33s might be a bit short on 31s. if u wna run 31s get sum lower ratio diffs i have some if you require. Like i said if doing it id try and find a cheap td42 gq rolled rusted whatever and swap out most of the parts, wasnt too bad of a job.

If you can cut the mounts off of the 4.2 chassis you can then cut the mounts off the 2.8 chassis. Put the gearbox and crossmember in and bolt the engine to it with the mounts bolt to it from the 4.2 chassis and lower it into place and weld them on. I think from memory the left mount on the 2.8 it in the right position but the drivers side mount is not. Some are 4 bolt engine mounts and some are 2 bolt. If you are good at fabicating you would be far better off use the patrol rear trailing arm bushes for the engine mounts as the 4.2 ones tear all the time if you do alot of 4wdriving.

Also the pinion flange on the rear diff has to be changed to suit the rear tail shaft.

I think it is a worth while swap. Makes the car so much better to drive and it increases re sale value.

Hope that helps, lozz
