I have the 1HD-T and I found a 3 inch mandral bent exhaust was a good start and made a difference.

Having mucked around on these engines quite alot, including changing camshaft to 1HZ, fitting several kinds of different turbos and intercoolers, I can say that in my experience, the single best change was actually a very big front mount eBay intercooler, 14psi and adjust the settings on the exterior of the fuel pump to suit.

Steps I would reccomend are as follows:

(1) Increase boost to 14psi and adjust fuel pump (exterior settings) to suit

(2) Fit front mount cheap ebay (600mmx300x75mm) core intercooler. Further adjust settings on pump (such as decrease spring pressure on aneroid)

(3) change the turbo, I can help with spec.

(4) Fit 3" or so exhaust with custom dump pipe. Most do this first, and if you decide not to go with another turbo, it definately makes a difference in performance everywhere. But When you can pick up a new turbo for the same price roughly as a quality exhaust, the turbo in my opinion should be changed first. Yes there is alot more backpressure, but the increase in efficiency of the new turbo can more than cope with this and of course it also ebnefits greatly from the exhaust.

It might seem bizzare, but there are alot of gains in the intercooler and changing the turbo takes things to a whole new level.

Currently I use an FTE and I am at 177hp @ wheels (4 wheels too, with 31" tyres). I never got there with the 1HDT, but did get to 143hp @ 4 wheels on 33" tyres and it still drives fine (>50,000km later) with that tune 3 years down the track.

Hope that helps

I would have thought that around the 200hp mark would me easy for the hdfte? Im making near on 160 with my 1hz. Perhaps your tunes are conservative. Mine is far from that.

Hi,
I've only just discovered this forum as I'm relatively new to L/C 4WDs. I now own a 79 series RV with an 1HD FTE. I tow a tandem horse float and whilst the ute does fine on the flat it struggles on the hills.
I've been exploring a CP chip install and a 3" exhaust upgrade but was pointed to your work from another forum I'm on. The comments you make above look impressive.
Do you have any views about the likely improvement I could get from each of a chip, exhaust, turbo mods, different turbo and intercooler. Like all of us, the bikie barrel isn't endless, so if I'd like to pick the best one or two options.
Cheers
AJ

Never heard of a 1hz cam going into a 1HD before sounds interesting but not much gain you say Graeme?

Your not alone Z()ltan a friend of mine had a 100 series wagon with 17psi made 178 or 187 rwhp and went like a rocket worked in a tuning shop in brissy.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
