turbo blowing out oil

Post by Slayer »

had the hose from the inlet manifold back to the turbo off and it was lined with thick sludgy oil, not a lot, just a slight coating, i wiped what i could away but its like glue, would this explain the bit of blackish blue smoke im blowing? is it a blown oil seal or is it normal?

Do you have a crankcase ventilation hose from the rocker-cover to the inlet tract? If so, where does it plumb in to the intake? Could be fumes coming thru there?

yeh its got the hose comming from the crank case, goes into the inlet side of the turbine, shouldnt it seal and not makes its way through the turbine to the outlet of the turbo ( into inlet manifold?)

Sounds like normal blowby to me. The engine has wats called positive crankcase ventilation. This is to stop the fumes venting to the atmosphere. As a result a slight film of oil will coat all the inlet parts.
With a turbo there is more blowby resulting in more oil. If the engine has a lot of miles on it then you will have the same result.
A slight film is ok but if the oil drips out then you may have a problem, either a worn seal in the turbo or worn piston rings.
I clean mine regularly to keep the bluish smoke down as my engines nearly stuffed.
Time for a GQ me thinks :D

Apart from blowby, an turbo seals, is the oil return line kinked???, alowing the pressure to push past the seals??? Not common, but it does happen.

I have recently gone through a hell of a mess with turbo/ engine trouble and have learnt a little. Give lachlan a call at "Turbo Technics", he is a top bloke an will be able to give you a bit of advice, 0417041941
