Dash Lights Suddenly on

Post by Newtothefourbeworld »

hey all,

was working on the car today (92' 80 series landcruiser 4.2d) replacing the fan as the a/c tensioner snapped and took out most of the fan.

anyway once i was done i started the car only to notice that the 'battery charge light', 'check water in fuel filter light', 'check air element light' and 'timing belt' light all stayed on.

now on top of that the central locking kit installed in the car (by previous owner) is also playing up now.

If i rev the car up while its sitting there the indicators come on and stay on for a while. (like 5 seconds solid). When the indicators are on the other dash lights go off but then revert back to being on. Also if i unlock/lock the car from the remote key the dash lights go off while the centrak locking is attempting to work.

I really hate electrical issues especially when i havnt done any of the excess wiring on the car so have no idea where anything runs!!

Now unless it is a complete coincidence that i was working on the car and then this started to happen the only place that i could have disturbed would be the engine bay (as i had to get up on the engine to reach some of the bolts)

my question for you is: "Is there anywhere that all these circuits would be joined or can you think of anywhere in particular i need to check other than simply checking everything?"

also on a completely un-related note could anyone post up a pic of their engine bay showing the a/c belt tensioner as i bought a replacement but it doesnt look like it will work on my car (i dont remember what was there b4 and it broke some bracket and got lost on the freeway)

cheers for any assistance!

just searched (it wasnt working before for some reason?!) on the dash lights issues and this seems to be most likely the alternator from what i can work out?

given that i was in the engine bay and didnt go through any water etc i am hoping it is the plug on the back of the alternator and not the alternator itself.

any help on the other issue would still be great and if the alternator doesnt fix it i will post up again of the first problem.,

it does sound like the alternator, but it might not be the alternator which is bad. Just check that the front main pulley is actually spinning at the same rpm as the engine. If the key on the crank has snapped from overloading if bits of your ac tensioner caught up in the belts, then your front pulley might be slipping on the crank.

i had a belt let go and got a bit caught up which i assume is why mine went snap. drove it for a thousand k too before it started slipping enough to notice.

not the same car but same brand. when my alt screwd up in my lux all the lights came on. in my instance someone had badly soldered a wire inside the alt which had become detached. on mine there was an inspection plate on the alt and it could be fixed in the vehicle.

Usually on an 80 the dash lights come on when the alt gives up the ghost. But i have never heard of the indicators coming on?? sounds like there may be more than one problem?

plug was fine however one of the other wires that is on the bolt of the alternator was broken. New 'O' type connector and was all good. I assume the indicators were coming on due to the central locking kit playing up......

now....anyone have an engine bay picture of their a/c belt tensioner?
