Ceramic coated pistons

What would happen if you got a new stock piston for your motor and had it ceramic coated, would the ceramic coating make the piston too big for the bore? Got no idea how thick the coating would be and am toying with the idea of doing this for a turbo diesel.

They only coat the top of the piston. There is a coating you can do the skirts in but not sure the thickness of it.

Normally ceramic crowns and teflon coated skirts

Yep they ceramic coat the combustion surface of the piston and what is called a dry film lubricant for skirts, it will not affect tolerance from memory thickness of lubricant is around 0.01mm or something similar.

yeh doesnt affect tolerances i have it on my td42 pistons hopfully it prevents them from cracking

Cerakote have coatings for the top and skirts of pistons .slr coating in brisbane do it .

Can old reusable pistons be used or would carbon build up etc effect the coating just like oil would paint?

They would just have to be cleaned/sandblasted before coating. Cerakote is definetly the best quality ceramic that I have come across.

There are two grades that HPC in Melbourne do, one can build up to about 3 thou and is suitable to build up second hand pistons, check your ring land wear though.
