what do you think? is it possible to put your vehicle on the right line, drive the right line, with the right throttle, etc etc, and for some reason still not get over the obstacle? ie can you blame the vehicle or is it the drivers fault?

There is allways a good line and if you dont pick it often ya stuffed. I can drive my cruiser up tracks no worries at home but i often drive a bad line just to make it interesting...

There are obstacles which some vehicles just can't climb.

Then there are obstacles which a given vehicle is capable of climbing with a sufficiently talented driver, but that is a different issue.

The best driver you can find could'nt conqeur a decent dune on stockton beach in a mini-moke.

But the better driver would generally be able to get a std vehicle further than a novice in a modified vehicle.

Anyway, back to the string.

Id be tending to say that it has more to do with the driver, 2 of the exactly the same cars, exactly the same setup, but different drivers will vary between how they drive the track, how they handle the 4by, the amount of throttle control,

When i fiirst got my MQ, my mate had the diesel version, i had the petty, he had welded fron centre, and i used to drive all the same lines as he did, he had flexy springs, mine wernt to good, i drove alot ov stuff on 3 wheels,

it also comes down to knowing the limits of the 4by, between the different drivers, mate in his MQ would never drive the line i drove especially if i had a wheel majorly catching air

EDIT:-may i also add that a good eye for detail and memory will greatly aid the driver in many circumstances

I voted driver. I believe that in the current climate, there are a lot of over modded rigs out there with drivers that do not understand the dynamics of a basic truck, and the mods cover the lack of knowledge in this area. The person that concentrates more on the purity of the drive, than on the mods, will have a better memory for the track that is going under them, and will be able to search for the better lines and stick to them. Of course good mods will enhance the knowledge base. But good tools won't really help a bad tradesman...

I vote both.

Obviously you need to be able to drive, but if you didn't think the vehicle made a difference you'd go off-road in a Hyundai Excel, and you certainly wouldn't bother modifying your fourby since, hey, it's all up to the driver isn't it?

It's true that good tools won't save a bad tradesman, but it's also true that good tools DO help a good tradesman.

I voted driver.

Noticed it in the Feroza - the more you drive, the more you understand teh vehicle and capabilities, and eventually you become more aware of the better lines etc.

Now, I drive a completely different vehicle (Patrol), so all I learnt in the Feroza has changed because I am able to drive different lines (or actually have to).

Therefore, it all comes back to the driver, but it does depend on the terrain. Sometimes, you just cant drive something, no matter how well you know the vehicle.

Monty, you make so much more sence with shorter hair... it's like all of what you were trying to explain got lost somewhere in there.

Ok so the lawn-mower story was just that, a story, but on other porters relater matters I was surprised how far Chris got his N13 Pulsar down the first step and back out- with no breakages. Maybe this thread can be hijacked into how far have you got a 2wd vehicle down (and back!) a recognised off road track. I remember the Stanza used to make all kinds of trips out there and only once got bogged in one of the puddles next to the pistol club, requiring about 1.5hrs of self recovery with a sissor jack and a couple of branches- wasn't I muddy by the end of that day!
