Does the gearbox and transfer case share their oil? or are they seperate entities with a mechanical actuator?
The reason I am asking is, I have a LN106 thats got a leak coming from front drive output on the transfer case. It appears to be continually leaking even though the hilux has been off the road for a while.
Ive got a seal to replace the output shaft seal, but just trying to find good help up my way to do this job is proving hard lol.. (Im in Katheine NT).
Im trying to get the Lux back on the road asap and with transfer case leaking still, its one of the jobs holding me up.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From the factory they don't. There is a seal between them. But in 90% of hilux's this seal is stuffed so that they share the oil.

The dodgy fix for the intra-case leak is to fit a balance hose between the two filler plugs - this helps to ensure one case isn't run dry whilst the other floods. This mod is so common that repco/bursons etc often stock a kit.
Obviously you'll still have to fix the output seal but it's a relatively easy job - try and get your hands on a manual and go from there.

the transfer case doesnt take much fluid at all so if you have a leak I suggest you keep checking it or your transfer case may run dry. The transfer has a chain inside that carries fluid well and When the seal between the transfer and box is letting fluid pass its usually fluid being thrown up and over into gearbox from the transfer while in FWD which is why the bypass works so well because the fill plug on the gearbox is higher so as it gets overfull it simply drains back to the transfer.
