Got an HDJ80R (1HD-T). Everynow and again the solenoid clicks (CLUNK) and the starter does not turn. It ahs done this about 3 or 4 times in 12 months.
This week it has started to do it more consistently, and when it does start sometimes it is a bit doey.
Battery is good.
Put multi meter on solenoid today while it was clicking and not starting. When starter did not turn and I held the key in start position, it measured only 7 volts. When it did crank, it measured 13 odd volts.
I was thinking it was a solenoid problem and was looking to put a kit through it. Could it be a starter relay issue? Where is the relay for the starter circuit?
Also, could I please get advice on the following part numbers.
Trying to get the part number for the 80 series starter so I can prder the new plunger/brushes/contacts
I can see on my starter a Toyota number that I think is:
28100-17810 very hard to tell as it was scratched.
On another 78 series today, I looked at the starter and its toyota number appeared to be: 28100 - 17090. Its Denso number was:
428 000-0520
Can anyone confirm what the correct part number/Denso number is?

Next time it does it, give the starter a bit of a hit with a hammer, don't go crazy, just a firm tap or two. Then give her another try, if it turns over and starts there is a fair chance there is gunk in the starter stopping the brushes or whatever they call them from sliding.
There is a rubber nipple on the bottom of the starter which I think acts as like a breather but they tend to perish and once they do all sorts of crap can get in there.
Either way, it can't hurt to take out the starter and take the case off and give it a good clean. If you have it out you might as well replace the contacts (they are about $5 I think) while you have it out of the car.
Believe me, it is much better to do it at home than in the Archer River campsite with the vehicle covered in mud!!!

The solenoid contacts wear out. it's a common thing with them. the rest of it is probably ok if it hasn't seen much offroading.
There is no relay in the low current circut. Sometimes it can burn out but doesn't happen often. only likely to happen if you are doing alot of cranking, and the diesels generally kick over pretty easy.
Some people will pop one in anyway. Pretty simple to wire one in right near the starter.

There is a small plate near the solenoid.
It covers the main solenoid contacts that are used to power the motor directly.
When they have carbon build up on them it will not allow them to contact properly.
Some wet and dry, compressed air and it will be like new again.
