CA18 into sierra
CA18 into sierra
has anyone done or heard of a CA18 conversion into a sierra????
Yes, it's been done.
Question is, do you want it to be legal? Last year of the CA was 1991, so you've got almost no chance of getting it approved in a 1995 model car unless you do $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ emissions testing etc.
Not a bad swap at all though if your car is old enough- quite a compact, tough motor- and you can use a nissan auto too.
3RZ would have to be close to the ultimate 4 cylinder for a sierra. 110Kw/240Nm It's a 2.7 litre motor- and that might cause problems in your state- not sure. In vic, there's at least one engineer who's not crazy about more than 100Kw in a sierra.
The base CA is just under 100Kw, as is the J20 vitara motor.
You need to talk to an engineer before you pour money and time into something you can't cert though.
Steve.

its an emisions thing simple, you cant have a new car with an older motor uness it passes the new car years emisions laws. i dont know how strigent emision laws where in 95 though, you could still buy a suzuki carbed motor after all.
this new interest in the 3rz is all very well
but isnt there displacement limit as well as a power limit when it comes to upgrading a motor?
and the 2rz is probabl just as good option in a zook but to me it would be more exnsv than a j20
which i think work with a g1 adaptor plate?)

My understanding is that pretty much all the nissan RWD/4WD autos are similar - i.e the GQ patrol auto is pretty similar to the SR auto. They are pretty similar to the AW-4 autos IMHO.
We had a car in the club running an atmo SR and auto in the club - went well.

Re: CA18 into sierra
Sorry to bump a old thread but I am about to put one of these into my build up. From what I have read found and have been told the ca18 auto is not as strong as the ca20 auto. The ca18 auto has a brain and the ca20 does not once again a plus, and last but not least the ca20 auto is shorter then the ca18 auto.
Can some of you out there with the CA18 in your sierra post up some pictures of how you have mounted it and or mabye just post up the link to your build up?

Re: CA18 into sierra
no pictures, i used hilux engine mounts(ca mounts are expensive in comparison + i have about 1000000 hilux mounts), and remade the frame mounts to suit. mounted the engine as low as possible (no body lift). This will require the steering box to be moved forward(no prob for urs) to clear the sump.
Am also researching autos to go behind it as the auto is abit shorter not to mention nicer offroad and will be nicer to the rest of the driveline.
Its a when I get time project so not much has really been done to it lately.

Re: CA18 into sierra
I have a ca18de in a sj413. engine from a s13 silvia with factory silvia auto. Most of that era nissan autos are the same centre section (ca, sr, 300zx, rb20, and terrano/pathfinder) Patrol and twin turbo 300zx have same val;ve body but have more clutch packs than the others.
My engine is on custom mounts, (bolt through bush style). the auto has had the last 200 odd mm cut off the output shaft and the housing mated to a hilux transfer housing with custom shaft connecter that bolts to the park lock gear on the rear of the auto. This arrangement places rear output about the same place fore aft as the original zuk one.
Running 32 10.5 simexs on hilux 4.88s it was a bit gutless but it now has super charger and is mint now.
Its a bit off topic but yeah it can be done and is a good swap. Cooling has been one issue even with a tripple core radiator.
Will try and get some pics for you, (computer with them on died) if you want.
Oh yeah zuk is not road legal but is used for NZ winch challenges.
