80 vs 105 steering box strength
I broke the main shaft out of my 80 box and was wondering if the 105 box was any stronger? Or if it even bolts in? I'm pretty sure it will but no point changing if they are no stronger.

I bought a new 105 box to replace my original box and I had to get a new pitman arm as the sector shaft was a little larger. Oh and they should bolt straight on to the 80

i measured the shaft on a mates tonight and it is a couple of mm bigger.
Also talked to a mate who works at Toyota, and he said they had never replaced a 105 box due to a twisted shaft, whereas they have done heaps of 80's.
So i think i'll give it a go.

Here in the states there is an upgrade to the sector shaft. It is the one from the 105. You do however need to get the upgraded matching pitman arm aswell. It fits right in your 80 series box. How much are replacement boxes down there? My 80 steering is getting hard and the rebuild/seal kit did not help any. Good luck.

last time I was driving thru some big arse wombat holes and the left front was up on the bank and the right was dropped into the hole.. as it was climbing up out of the hole (vertical wall) it was trying to steer itself left (which if it had of I would of rolled) so i was trying to hold the steering straight and then the main shaft let go. not fun at all.

This is interesting to read, as a few months ago the same thing happened on a Logan night run of all places...
Had to call the misses out in the Disco and get a car trailer and some help to pull the disco and trailer up a couple of hills.... Still living it down...
My solution was another 80s box I got from the wrecker for $150, but if it happens again the 105 might be the way to go, might keep my eye out for one in the mean time....
And I asked around and no one else had heard of it... Well sounds more common then I thought...

seems fairly common from my experience.
I twisted one after I slid off a wet, muddy forestry rd into a ditch at around 40km/hr. I replaced mine with a 2nd hand unit ($500 but mine is the speed sensitive version) 12hrs later I twisted it too after front left wheel dropped into a rut/pothole I didnt see, again at 40-50km/hr. fixed the second one by removing the steering wheel, rotating it slightly and refitting
