zd30 air box lid air flow
zd30 air box lid air flow
hi,
just wondering how much power you can run using the zd30 airbox before having to put an aftermarket lid on?
i have a td42 with a modded pump and bigger turbo and want some where around 180hp at the wheels will the airbox lid be to restrictive for that much power?
at the moment i have got a 4.5 airbox mounted in the same position as the 4.2 air box but where the inlet is for the airbox leaves me no room to run a second battery under the bonnet.
any info would be great.
thanks, lozz

Re: zd30 air box lid air flow
We have had quite a few TD42's up around the 200whp figure with the standard air box in place. Lifting the lid at that power level did lean the fuel ratio out about 1/2 a part, so there is restriction there but not a lot.
We are in the process of developing a new lid to suit the GU base that will include a much larger entry air filter and smooth taper from the base to the turbo inlet pipe with no reduction in size.

Re: zd30 air box lid air flow
We have customers with boosted diesels and when fitting the High flow airbox we sell, they have reported noticable gains. Our lid flowed 308cfm@8"H2O compared to the standard lid at 212cfm@8"H2O
The key is replacing the entire airbox to allow for a full 3.5" outlet to fit under the bonnet. Our airbox sits lower in the engine bay than the STD one does.

Do you have any pics or flowbench sheet with the data on it?PatrolDocta wrote:We have customers with boosted diesels and when fitting the High flow airbox we sell, they have reported noticable gains. Our lid flowed 308cfm@8"H2O compared to the standard lid at 212cfm@8"H2O

I have seen alot of guys fitting the billet lid you can buy.
I sent one away to our flow bench guy and the results it came back with were pretty dismal compared to the claims by the manufacturer.

Re: zd30 air box lid air flow
That airbox is a nice bit of gear very reasonably priced to.
@ Dieselover. Cool story, look forward to your next informative insight into 3L diesel performance

Re: zd30 air box lid air flow
Matt at United fuel injection sell replacement lids for the TD42t air box. They have adapted a very bling stainless steel high polished mod that gves you 3.5 inch. They are $250. Seems to sell heaps of them. I believe he has done back to back testing with a definite change in results.

Pics in the add as linked by red dog 4x4.
We dont have a flowbench data sheet. Flowbenches are not like dynos, they do not spit out a user friendly printout for the user. The flow figures are calculated from readings taken from the manometers on the flowbench(these manometers can be seen in the pics on our add.)
In regards to the credibility of the flow figures of the billet lid..
When we tested a standard airbox, flow figures came out within 1% of the figures published by the manufacturer of the billet lid. This was great to see, because it meant that our test were comparible. We were super excited when our airbox outflowed the billet lids published flowrates significantly.

Re: zd30 air box lid air flow
You could plumb a standard zd30 airbox up to a 700hp engine, the airbox would then be a significant restriction in the intake system. You may then loose 200hp to the airbox, but you might still make 500hp.
If you can get a zd30 box for free, run that, then when funds permit, free up the intake by fitting one of our airboxes.
Alternately you could sell your free zd box for $250-350 and upgrade to our box for $50-150 bucks.
Anyhow, Best of luck with your project.

Re: zd30 air box lid air flow
How big is that top mount intercooler? Do you have more pictures of it?
