interchangeability
ok, since the transmission is the last straw, i need a parts rig.
40's and 45's are fairly expensive as parts rigs, 60's are too,
what i want to know, how do the transmissions from a
post 79 fj40
hj45 or hj47
bj40
fj55 (and difference between years)
fj60
hj60
compare with a 1976 fj40. what is the same, what is similar enough to bolt up, and which could i use most of. for instance, which 55's had disk brake axles, i know i can do a disk swap using 60 series stuff (on my 45). 60 series gives me power steering too. 55 series gives me some back springs for the 40.
what i am asking for is an opinion. the 55's seem to be cheaper than the others, for more of a rig (road worthy for 2.5 grand, as aposed to a non running 45 for the same price).
panels aren't a huge concern at the moment, but a couple of 40/45 panels would be handy.
oh, and what year did 40's go to the 4 speed?
oh, and does the hj45 and fj40 use the same clutch?

4 speed went to 1984 in the HJ47, 1981 in the BJ/FJ 40-42's.
Post 79 or 81 (can't quite remember) is the split transfer that is the transfer of choice.
Post '79 also for disk brakes.
You can buy a early 60 for under 2k with rego and you get wider housings as well as power steer and discs and split transfer but depends on the year re 4 or 5 speed.

nah its the same transfercase. all you will need is longer tail shafts on the front and shorter on the rear. all 'f' series engines bolt to 'f' series box's. some box's have longer input shafts, i think it was the diesels.
also the selector rail on a 60 series 5 spd is different to a 40 series 5 spd. so if you buy the 60 series box you will need to modify the hole where the gear stick comes through.
i have a 40 series 5 spd for sale at the moment.

he is gay or full of it, they fit with miles to spare on my rig. I have done two and seen 4 others, the 4 and 5 speed form the 60 series is the same as the 4 and 5 speed fitted from the factory after 1980 to all 40 series anyways. So yeah, its no worries getting it to fit.
You could get a petrol 60 for $1500 or less with a rusty body, then all you need is to bolt all the stuff onto your rig. Or sell it and buy mine.
hands and mums dont count!!!
i also have a 60 series box in my 45. pretty sure its 3 inches longer.
and bj they arent identically the same. the selector rails are different. on the 60 series, the gearstick is mounted at the back of the top plate and on the 40 its up the front. this minor detail was important to me when fitting my V8. coz i didnt want my gearstick in my heater.
but if you put a 60 series box behind the 2F it will mean your gearstick will be moved a bit too far back.
