Re: Putting a gen3 in a D1
Why would it matter, the transfer case is about the only bit of the driveline you could think of keeping with gen3

Re: Putting a gen3 in a D1
Gen 3 is not the issue, its the transmission choice (which then leads to adaptor choice and what will position the engine and transmission in the best location). Most agree the rover ZF and manual transmissions are too weak, and a beefed up ZF is way to pricey and even then may not last as the Gen 3's are so easy to get more power out of. The only commonly available adaptors are the Marks adaptors for the TH400 and 4l-80e. There are reportedly 4l60e and th700 adaptors floating about but none produced in any significant quantities as far as I'm aware. LRA used to do a kit to drop in a gq 5 speed but their website says they no longer produce this any more.

Re: Putting a gen3 in a D1
If it was mine I'd run a Patrol 5 speed and Patrol transfer or the 6L80E and a Patrol transfer.
Depends if you want auto or manual.

Re: Putting a gen3 in a D1
You could make your own adaptor, or get one made- patrol to lt230
