hilux 2.8l power mods

Post by Blacky88 »

hey guys have just bought a 1995 ifs extra cab hilux, got it cheap and am only keeping it for a year-year and a half before upgrading, now i know they are gutless standard and that there are heaps of topics about gettin power from them. but my question is with 410,000kms on it, is this way to many kms to be thinking about turboing it?( does use about 500ml of oil a week) or am just better off upgrading the exhaust to 2.5" and extractors, dont want to spend a fortune on it as am not keeping it for ever, already has snorkel, just want a bit more up the hills and to help pull the tinny. any info would be great thanks guys

then don't do anything to it, its complete waste of $$$.
trouble is with a worn engine a turbo will make the blowby worse and your already chewing through the oil which will get substantiation worse.
if its pops a ring or snaps the crank (which they are prone to doing if running on crap oil) then you have a ute thats not worth anything. at the moment its going and its sellable.

thanks tweak'e good point and info would it still benefit from extractors and 2.5" exhaust tho with these kms i can get this for $200 if not i wont worry bout it, it still runs good and doesnt blow smoke im only loosing 3mm down on the dip stick after 500kms just keepin an eye on it prob not even anywhere near 500ml of oil. thanks for your input

throw an exhuast on it. just put a 2 1/4inch 'sport system'. has done a world of good. cant wait to put extractors on too. i had a turbo kit but sold it as i thought the motor was alittle to tired. exhuast has opened her up again. gained an extra 700rpm and drops less in km/h up the hills around here

2 1/2" is way too big for a n/a motor.. I run a turbo and I have a 2 1/2" exhaust.

I'd go 2" with extractors you could push it with a 2 1/4 but doubt it will gain any thing but noise.

But you ain't going to get much of an increase for the dollars you will spend, IMOP save the coin as it also is wasted money when you sell it (all for minimal gains)

I agree with Brad exhaust and extractors make bugger all difference, if you're only going to sell it just put up with the lack of power for the time being. The 2.8L makes slugs look like a ferrari.

mate i previously owned a 94 hilux extra cab and put on snorkel, k&n air filter, extractors to a 2 1/4 exhaust with hi flow sports muffler.. found improvement but certainly didn't turn it into a racing machine. air filter is about $120 mark and the exhaust your probably going to be looking around $600??? me i would look into compression test and if ok look into 2nd hand turbo kit (going on eBay $1200-$1500) and run 2 1/4 max 2 1/2 exhaust.. least for the extra coin you`ll get to the top quicker and maybe gain so resell value..
