I seen buddahs car fore sale on here and thought it might be an awsome rig so i did a search on reliability and got this post. I currently have a 96 disco ive had for three months and had nothing but problems and parts are lot of $$$$$$. So are the cherokee (96 i think it was i take it you all konw the car) a reliable rig or not and how expensive to fix. I dont want to go through owning another lemon again....
Hey chicos many Jeeps are assemebled in Mexico, I wont argue that those hardcore Japs with their death before dishonour attitudes have better QC. . . but i dont give a rats, cos my 96 chero has been sweet as, hasnt missed a beat!
i still would prefer a US made 69-70 Fender Stratocaster than a 2006 Jap made one. I would prefer a 57 chev with a blown 454 then a Toyota Supra that pulls 10 seconds, but thats me
buy one.. dont buy one. really for that kinda coin you cant go past finding out yourself.
its the only true way to know who speaka de horse sheet and who speaka de truth
personally I like the idea of less wranglers
Makes me enjoy owning one even more cause they arent everywhere like hilux's and patrols.
When JEEPS become as common as a hilux over here Ill be selling up and buying a scout
Its ok to eat fish.. cause they dont have any feelings
While this topics hot I might just hit you all with a couple more questions.
I’ve got a Zook: obviously! but need something more comfortable for my 1 year old to ride in. She screams if I even put her in the Zook let alone drive her anywhere! Softop with loud right foot and great exhaust. LOL
So how bad is the fuel economy?
I would like to run 35” but probably 33” as I don’t want to chop the guards or attract too much attention. So how vulnerable are CVs and the driveline with these tyres?
I also plan on installing a Front Lockright first as its cheapest and changing the Diff Ratios to match the tyre size and correct the gearing.
I would be looking at a post 2000 wrangler.
Thanx.

It will drink more fuel than a zook being a 4.0L I6. Lot of people run 33s on and offroad, some will just use 35s just for offroad.
Dont need to chop the gurads, but a lift like 2-3" SL and 1" body usually does it. (Im sure one of the TJ boys will fill you in better on this!). Like all 4bys CVs (TJs dont have CVs thx wooders) or equivlanet driveline components can break but usually allright on the 33s, Ive heard mixed things about 35s, but really depends on how hard you drive
Usually 4.11s or 4.56s are suited for 33s, cant remember for 35s whats best. I know a few dudes with the front lockrights and are happy with them.

My Zook is locked Front and Rear, I pulled out the gears and had them fitted, much easier no mistakes. Suspension work is easier. Broken CVs are par for the course I guess although the Zook hasn't broken one yet.
But what sort of fuel economy? How bad is it?
Parts are cheap from the States and only take 5 days to arrive. I don't want a car that has already been thrashed around the bush, you are also never sure of the workmanship on that sort of car unless you know the owner well.
I know standard replacement parts are dear as poison but I am buying a Jeep for the same reason I bought a Zook. Heaps of stuff available from the US much cheaper than here for Toyotas and Nissans.
Not as capable as my Zook but will come close and has the bonus of aircon and actually towing a trailer at highway speeds.

Fuel cnsumption is already answered below - just expect it to be worse
CV's? - what are those?? TJ's don't have CV's.... and running 35/36" tyres I;ve only had one axle uni go on me and I'm not so light ob the go pedal
Driveline is another issue - THE weak spot is the slip yoke on the back of the transfer case - fot a SYE and your problems will be solved
I have a lockright in the front too and have been really happy with it. I got it beofre regearing, then when I regeard I just bought a hemisphere to suit the new ratios....easy as ....
Any more q's??
Pity they didn't stick that Merc Deisel into one. I don't do a lot of driving in the 4by usually only going out on the weekend for a run anyway.
Thanx for the replies.
Forget the Merc Diesel, I want the new 5.7L Hemi for my Wrangler. I didn't buy a 4x4 for fuel savings. My 2.8d Hilux used to get 15L/100km the way I drove it, my Wrangle gets the same and I get to keep up with traffic
98 TJ: HardTop, 4" lift, RE LA, 33" KL-71s, WARN FR Bar, TBT Rockers, 4.56 RP, Airlocker FR&RR.
New Diesel on the way
I dropped in to see the local Jeep dealer and he reckons they are on the cards for next year.
If you haven't driven a new generation TD you are in for a real surprise. They put out huge amounts of usable torque from very low down and they will blow away most current generation petrol powered 4bys. It would also be great to go for a drive and not have to stop the way there and on the way back to fill up.
I am waiting, I think, or may grab one anyway and swap it for the TDI later.

DAMN STRAIGHT! I used to worry about fuel consumption but i have too much fun in the wrangler to even remember it...
I'm positive that a nice new diesel donk in the next wrangler will be awesome!!!!!!
I don't have high hopes for the new turbo diesel wrangler. Latest rumour I've heard is that it'll be the same donk as the KJ (2.8 litre). In the KJ this donk works pretty hard so I can only assume that with a heavier wrangler body, it'll have mediocre performance espescially in the long wheelbase 4 door model. Specs for the 2.8CRD are:
Engine Type I - 4
Number of Cylinders 4
Displacement 2776
Max Power 120 kW / 3800 rpm
Max Torque 400 Nm / 1800 rpm
Bore 94.0 mm
Stroke 100 mm
Compression Ratio 17.5:1
Fuel System Common Rail, direct electronic fuel injection
Fuel Type Diesel
If this donk is used, I can see an increased demand for performance chips to improve low torque and reduce turbo lag. Personally, I'd have preferred to see the 3.0CRD mercedes engine in the new wrangler:
Engine Name Power Tech 3.0L CRD V6
Engine Type V6
Number of Cylinders 6
Displacement 2987cc
Max Power 160kW @ 4000
Max Torque 510Nm @ 1600-2800
Bore 83.0mm
Stroke 92.0mm
Compression Ratio 18.0:1
Fuel System Common rail direct injection
Fuel Type Diesel
Not long to wait until we find out what Australia will be getting. If a gutless engine choice is made then the knobbers at DC deserve to get a good whipping.
