Yep the patrol has plenty of room in the engine bay for a v6

As for if its better than the 4.2 id say yes and no.

As the time and money to swap in the v6 for little gain in hp Will be very very very very disappointing .

Unless its to keep the weight of the rig down like this.

yeah just trying to look at different options being qld p plate laws your restricted to 4.0litres where as the eco's are 3.8 and the 4.2 in the vehicle now is quite worn and chewwing through juice.

The v6 will be very underpowered for the patrol, for example I have gq with the Holden 5.0 v8 and the performance is just okay

the 3.8l motor produces power too high in the RPM range so you will need to have too much RPM for any good 4WDing. If your looking for a 6cy swap go the Ford 6 from the XR6 or XR6 turbo. that will make it go and produce better power as its a Straight 6. Straights have a better torque figure down low.

unless ofcourse you fit a supercharged V6..... then you'll have heaps more lowdown grunt than you'll know what to do with

I used to tow in a commodore - similar weight to a normal patrol (inc trailer) - power was acceptable but the fuel consumption was stupid. the commo engine doesn't suit heavy loads towing etc as well as any number of other options.

the falcon i had after it was hugely better.

But personally I would save lots of $$$ and efi your tb and get better power, better ecconomy than it does now for a fraction of the cost and effort and no need for engineers etc to get involved.

No way in hell I would consider putting a 3.8 ecotec into a patrol.
