Hi Mate,
The gen 1 (yours) doesn't have the same amoun't of stuff which can be bolt in swapped with other models as the later shape. AFAIK they are quite different with just about most parts.
As for engines you could do just about anything, but what do you want to achieve? I personally would never bother with a 253 or similar but thats me.
Any conversion like that is going to cost a fair bit especially compared to the value of your truck.
What are your plans for it?
Daily driver and weekend fun.
or
just weekend fun.
or
hard core
or
comps
do you have a budget in mind? or are you just keen to jump in and play with it?

Re: 1981 hilux single cab if u no anything about them
22RE or 3RZ would be the best options, it will have a great power to weight ratio with a 3RZ fitted, the gen1's were quite light if I remember correctly.
Not sure but 18R and 22R should share a similar block so it may be a bolt in job, 3RZ is nto very hard at all to adapt and I believe there are bolt in mount adaptors off the shelf to do so.

yeah i want a motor that ant going to cost alot to put in.
Re: 1981 hilux single cab if u no anything about them
I would go the 3RZ personally, they are EFI, 2.7L DOHC with a square bore so they have good torque.
U shud be able to pick up a package with complete engine, lume and ECU for around 2k.
But if u are on a tight budget a carby 22R will possibly bolt straight in, best bet is to do some google searching as this would have been done more then once, especially in the states.
