Cut Rear Quarter......what next?
Cut Rear Quarter......what next?
Hi All
I got stuck in and cut off my rear quarters. Of all those who have made this mod, how did you seal up the large holes now there?
I can't weld, so I was wondering if there were any non'welding options.
All perspectives and opinions gratefully accepted.

Hrmmm... no offence mate but it takes a special kind of person to start cutting before finding out the answers to questions like that!
As for non-welding options, it looks as though you could conceivably fibreglass it. You can buy kits with sheets, resin, and hardener at Supercheap or even better at a good boat shop. Done well, fibreglass is an acceptable material for a car body.
Looking at the thread DirtPigs referred to, it sounds like the *cut less off and fold some of the extra steel up* option is preferable. Cut, fold, then go over the area with fibreglass and finally tidy up with bog, sanding, and paint.
I don't actually think this is as good as welding, but it's an answer to your question at least.
Cheers,
Jason
Bigblue mav wen i went about doin mine all i did was cut -em off (as im a sheety and have steel handy) was getsome 2mm zincseal place it under the cut 1/4 and trace around cut on the inside of theline and just keep trimmin (grinding to shape) until it fitted firmly in place bout 10 mm up from the bottom of the hole .......once a firm fit was acquired remove and paint with Galmet or zinc it for added protection then place back in and sikaflex in place and leave to set ..............bingo ...........i also added a 20mm hole in the front corner and added a rubber bung so that if shite did get in ..ie water(and it has from the vent on the side above ) all i have to do is remove and let it dry...........you'll find that they come with a bung already from factory on the back side of the 1/4 these are the ones i used............the 1 on the under side would work great as it allows the trapped water to escape but from memory is very close the side and in my case was farked.......
pm me if you like and i can send a few pic's ( sorry bout the story )

I'm pretty sure that the bodywork is legal provided you don't hack into the chassis and you don't open it up in a way that would let exhaust gases in - neither of which is the case here. However, no suing me if I'm wrong...
I imagine that taking the fuel tank(s) right out is recommended but as a slack bastard I would probably run them low then make sure I had a sheet hanging wherever necessary to prevent sparks from landing in that general area.
Good luck; we'll come visit you in hospital
