hey all.. been on here for a while now.. looking, reading and learning.. now i have a question of what people think i should do..
i currently drive a 93 solid axle front diesel hilux..
i have 2" lift.. pretty shagged. 33" cooper ST's rear detroit locker...
now i have received a 5 grand bonus to spend on the hilux..
my options are..
surf turbo, new front springs (to accomodate winch) snorkel and general repairs.. however im curious as the big girl has 280,000 kms and i dont really want to destroy the wngine. so any ideas would be good.. also will a new 2" with the winch (steel cable) clear to 33's or do i still need to either A move the front diff forward or B cut the guards.. any help would be awesome...

surf turbo on your engine shouldnt cost more than 1 grand.
re drill your spring perch and move your diff forward to improve clearance, if you dont really need the room, it is good to have anyway.
dont be cheap and get rope instead of steel cable, or buy a tigerz11 with rope on it already. it is safer and easier on your hands.
so you still have about 3200 dollars left. you could re new some suspension bushes and replace worn or sagged suspension. or upgrade to a better set up if thats your thing. have you got any bar work? maybe a front bar or sliders? lights are good for night time. and a good exhaust and snorkle to go with the engine ad turbo.

2. Front Lockright - $400 (locktup4x4 have em cheap at the moment)
3. 4.7 t/c reduction gears $460 delivered (through lowrangeoffroad.com or trail-gear.com)

sounds goods mate... i got just a winch bar tjm or arb.. was on there when i started.. not really looking into the big tires.. had 35's before of a gu and thats a lot of rubber to have on a hilux.... will H/D front spring and moving the diff be fine with the bar, winch and clear the tires... and specific brand tried and tested..
but.. 35's and all the fruit would be nice!!!!

Air lockers, 2nd had 35's, and gears, in that order. If i could do it all again, thats the way id go, youd do it for 5 grand easy, Stil have coin left for bits like lights ect.

Then worry about it, oil changes, air filter and fuel filter regular and shell go for ever. I pulled mine out with 350 thou still going strong. They may be slow, but they are very reliable. The $1600 was a rough estimate from off the shelf parts:
-$200 - 2 rear coil springs
-$369 - 2 Bilstein 5125 shocks with 14" travel from Locktup
-$410 - 2 Snake Racing adjustable 670mm control arms for the uppers
-$420 - 2 Snake Racing adjustable 1020mm control arms for the lowers
That leaves you with $201 for brackets and a customs cross member for the upper control arm chassis mounts. I'm assuming you have access to a welder and can weld or know someone who can.
It could be done cheaper by making solid lower control arms out of 40mm DOM tube. Also, you can get long travel Dobinson shocks for $130 each if you want to save another $109. You could make solid upper control arms too but I'd stick to the adjustable ones to set the pinion angle easier.
Depending on the setup, you'd probable want either limiting straps or coil dropouts with retainers.

Personally, Ive seen leaf spring set ups that are extremely flexible, so I wouldnt go with any type of coil conversion at this stage.
Id be spending my money on.
turbo, and snorkel.
front locker(air if possible, but auto is great).
new springs(maybe RUF and IFS rears).
Barwork, winch and lights.
Seats and UHF.
You will have something thats not too bad onroad, great offroad and youll be comfy and happy.

I'd be wary on those adjustable control arms mentioned above...
from my experience they bend like tin foil.
but id say go lockers and CVs.

As others have said, Lockers, CV/axles, 4.7 gears.
With whatever you have left over look into gettin some flexy leafs and decent shocks and moving mounts around to get it all working.
IMO going coil on a hilux is a waste of money, there is that many off the shelf kits these days which will give bucket loads of flex from leafs that it isnt worth it.

cheers guys.. all sounds good... i have just purchased a set of h/d EFS springs and am going to move the diff.. going to look into a turbo and all the other little bits.. exhaust and snorkel..
as its more a touring car im not to keen on 35's, coils and all the adjustable gear..
anyone know what the tjm pro lockers are like in comparison to arb airs

See how the H/D packs go, you may find them very stiff. I would have just gone rope on the winch and used normal packs. My 12000lb winch with rope only weights 25KG so it makesa big difference.

i woudnt worry about Cv's as every1 is saying unless you get the turbo and go front locked.
To Twin Locked ARB's. I Priced Up a Prolocker and was little bit more expensive then a ARB locker.
If i was you Would get Arb Air Lockers front and Rear And High Steer To Go With Your New Springs.

IMO If you go reduction gears then you need better CV's and Axles, High steer is a great idea but only if your lift and travel warrant it.
A lack of front locker is all the more reason for better CV's in my opinion

I said nothin about reduction gears so just front locker and no turbo and no reduction gears no need for them. Won't have the power to break them unless he is foot to the floor. The locker like I said befor will let him crawl instead of power through obsticals and the high steer is a good start and saves you money in the long run. I also have lockers, duals with 4.7's, turbo and 36's and the best mod was to fit longfield gear to the front axle. Its good to be able to put your foot into it without worrying, now I just detonate crownwheels at about 700rpm lol.
The NA diesel easily has enough torque to bust CV's if you get spirited, especially with decent rubber fitted. All depends what ur driving style is, as its a tourer he mite not need axles or gears

Sounds like a nice rig A1 mech. Any photos. In the process off doing my lux ATM. He is only running 33's as well which is why I feel he don't need cv's. I agree with you bout not having to worry if you ever want or need to boot it.
Also what diff ratio are you running A1mech what brand? Why not put a solid crown and pinion and make your hub the wear point?

Do hav a build up thread on here somwhere still I think, I run 4.56 diffs and 33's onroad, only use 36's offroad. hub gears, axles and CV's are all longs, front high pinion is nitro, Rear which I just fixed is a V6 nitro C&P now. Im slowly upgrading standard parts as I break them. The transfers are both 23 spline. People say dont bother with the 2.8, but if your not up for the effort and potential unreliability of an engine conversion then work with what you have. A turbo will tranform the 2.8.
mine N.A struggled on hills offroad where 1st low was too slow to get up a hill but 2nd low didnt have the power to make it up. the turbo changed all that.
with the money left i would go for reduction gears and mods to suspension which are cheap like ruf and ifs rears with extended shakles.
with that it will be pretty killer offroad. mine was twin locked on 33's with that suspension and it got up everything I tried.

its justa tourer mate.. and sometimes i go play in the hills but its 70% highway driving, 25% off road and maybe 5% hard ish core...
basically i just want a bit more power low down and hill driving.. camping rig more that a rock hopping rig..
