Help - Issue with Brunswick Diesel - WA

I am hoping someone out there in this forum can help me (or rather my father). Some of this information is second hand.

My father has 78 Series Troopy and recently had Brunswick Diesel in WA fit a new Chev Diesel (not certain size, but no turbo) into it along with changing diff ratios, tighten rear limited slip and anto locker in front and other ancillaries about 6 months or so ago. There were some issues regarding the trade in of the old motor at time of install that were resolved...

After the initial intall the vehicle was not pulling their van very well as they had installed incorrect ratios in the diffs, which they rectified. The original ratios was what Brunswick and told my father was requried.

Since then the motor has started to use 1L of oil every 1000 kms. The motor was serviced as recommended by Brunswick Diesel.

Brunswick have finally taken the vehicle back and had the motor looked at by an engine rebuilder I believe. Apparenty it has bad scoring on cylinders 6,7,8 and excessively worn oil rings for the age of the motor.

Now Brunswick are asking for $4,500 before they will return the vehicle but will not say what the money is for???

What I am asking of this forum has anyone had an issue with this motor or with this company? Any if you have any ideas on how to proceed???

I have suggested he speak with the ACC, police and his solicitor as they do not appear to complying with their warranty and in refusing to return his vehicle with no justification why, then it is theft.

Your thoughts and help is appreciated,

It's a complicated legal situation you are reporting and involves different legislations regarding warranty, contract law, fair trading practices. Best to speak to a solicitor. Shame the work wasn't done after Jan 1 under the new legislation.

yeah ask me, what a POS of an engine, i suggest you do a search on here and don't get sucked onto the advertising you see in 4wd mags.
Overwieght, gutless for size, have plenty of issues they do, my wifes 300tdi disco goes better. I've gone the isuzu 4bd1t now, a much much better engine with heaps more power, and way more reliability.
Some peolpe have success from these engines, but i'm guessing in saying around 20% would, every other person i've spoken to that has or had these engines was not happy with it, poor fuel economy and poor reliability.

Dwayne i feel for your old man, i hope he can resolve this.
petrol and a match will resolve it better ;)

I will enter the debate regarding the installation of the Chev 6.5 v8 diesel, I think there are many options and my parents may be have been talked into it.

Update: Well they have now given them an invoice for $3,200 but still no explaination why.

Parents spoke with Consumer Protection in WA and this is the second complaint the person they spoke too knows off. Apparently the Owner will not talk with my parents and the vehicle has been left outside with the bonnet off....

Is the petrol and match for the business??? They cannot get to their car!!!

This is starting not to look very good.

No invoice can be issued without a listing of what is being invoiced?

even if the put it down as labour the invoice has to say what they are charging for.

pursue it through fair trading or who ever it is over there and then through small claims tribunal.

Unfortunately this horror story has been heard at our shop more times than I would like to remember.
I had one poor guy just about have a breakdown infront of me after telling me how much he spent on his patrol.
3L went bang, full rebuild so like $12K
6.5 Went in, 30K
Diffs, 5K
Rebuild of the 6.5, 5.8K

And he was in to see if there was any performance mods that could be done to help the POS motor out.
After I got the quote for a supercharger, intercooler etc... done up which came to about another 10K, he just about broke down.

You know what the worst thing about it was, he has been a great customer for years and years. Instead of taking our advice on completely refurbishing his TD42T motor and doing all the power upgrades we can provide (about $18K in total) and keeping that vehicle. He choose to go down the 3L path, then didnt believe us how bad the 6.5's were.....

i've heard of quite a few people that have had an engine install from these guys then had to have their engine rebuilt, some have been supposed reco engines. beware :?

What about the people who pull out 1HD-FTEs to put in 6.5s...must be on drugs!! :crazyeyes: The only motor I would replace one of those with is a 6.6 Duramax!

It cant be that hard hard to get to the car, Its care and safety are there responsiblity whilst in brunswick diesels custody

Brunswick is just down the road from me so I can do a driveby and check to see if the car has been left outside with the bonnet up if you like and I'm glad I said no to them years ago when the owner tried to talk me into buying a rebuilt 6.5

Do you reckon thats to much to supply and fit a TD42 inplace of the 3L along with doing a 100% power and Torque upgrade on it? Not just make it go like a petrol because it never will :)
I know guys that have spent ALOT more than that with already a TD42 in there!

Nick - To these guys, their Vehicle/Van is their home. They dont own a property or anything like that, they basically live on the road 'Grey Nomads' as they have been aptly nick named.
They arent scared to spend a few bikkies on their 'home'. Its just a shame there is so many shops out there like this that will dribble shit till the cows come home to get their money, then...... Well look what the OP has written.
Shame on them and they deserve every public forum pasting they get. These 'Grey Nomads' have been the foundations of Northside 4x4 over the last 10 years and the reason so many of them keep coming back and referring their friends is because we understand what they want.
A Reliable truck - Number 1 most important thing.
Good performance, but not at the expense of smoke and engine life issues.
The ability to have it serviced and diagnosed 'if there is a problem' anywhere in Australia.
Knowing that they can call us 24/7 if there is a problem.
And a fair bill based on the quality of work performed.

We arent the cheapest, and certainly not the most expensive. But I know there is at least a couple of hundred Grey Nomads out there that will tell everyone they know, that we are the best at what we do.

Yeah there is a supercharger kit available for these motors.
Trying to fit a turbo in there is a super pain in the ass in most vehicles.

Banks do a kit, but it doesnt fit most aussie cars with these motors.

My 60 must be a freak then.
N/A 6.5 and it just works. Pulls hard down low, at around 80 and higher she is slower, but I can live with that. Engine was fitted about 13 years ago, it was rebuilt by linquip about 6 years ago. (Approx. 150.000km ago)
I paid $10k for it, with a heap of other stuff on her, (Air lockers, long range tanks, radios, drawers etc). I have had the fuel pump rebuilt thou, eng was checked at the same time (compression etc) and it all came up good.


I must admit, I wouldn't spend the sort of money needed to fit this engine into a 4by. I believe there are better options out there. But if you find one already done.......You can get a bargin.

Two stroke blowers are not performance enhancing superchargers.
The blowers on a two stroke (On the Detroit they are normally a 6/71 blower) are only there for scavanging reasons.
Even though it has a blower, it is still classed as a N/A engine as the exhaust valves are not closed until AFTER the piston covers the air box inlet port. Of course, the turbo and a change of cam and all that changes.
