Trouble starting Hilux

Post by Deleted User »

I`ve got an 85` Hilux Diesel ( LN65 ) and Im having trouble getting it to kick over ? At first I thought it was the battery .. not enough power, so I bought a new battery but I am still having the same trouble. ??
After the glow plug light goes out I try and get it to start but it just slowly turns over and over and over, etc , until after a while it eventually starts ( just about when the battery sounds like it is going to die ). As it is cranking over Im repeatedly pushing the accelerator pedal ( Ive been told that that dosnt do much on a diesel ? )

Any ideas / help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yeah mate, pumping the pedal won't do much.

Probably best to grab a cheap multimeter from Supercheap or something and do some simple tests.

Check the battery without cranking. 12.4 volts or higher. Check the battery while cranking. Should be about 10 volts or so, depending on the draw. Inspect your battery leads, the terminals could be corroded and f*cked. Check the wiring going to the starter. Visual and make sure you get full voltage at the starter itself. Check the wiring to the alternator. Check the earth from starter to the chassis. Check the earth from the block to the chassis.

When it runs does it sound alright? Does it rev freely? Is the charge light on on the dash?

Thanks for the reply.
Yea, when it runs , its perfect.
The charge light isnt on either.

I was at a mates place today ( who knows a bit about this sort of stuff. ) I jumped in the car and turned it on 3 times and it started perfectly 3 times ???
Then 1/2 an hour later while driving home I had to stop somewhere. When I tried to start it , it played up again ?? --- Isnt that always the way !

Sounds like sticky brushes in the starter motor!

Could be the whole starter motor, and if its making the same sound as mine was which I think it is, while ur tryning to start it, get someone to smack the bottom of the starter motor with a hammer and if it starts u need a new one...after i put the new one in, i still had trouble cause a wire that runs over the starter motor was lose, so just play around with that and see how it goes...

Hope it helps mate..
