WHERE DO I TAP IN A t FOR MY BOOST GUAGE????

Post by luxtc »

hi guys i have a 5L in my 94 lux with a safari turbo kit i have been to a turbo place to find out the answer with not much success so thought id ask here.i have a pipe that runs off the side of the turbo it runs done and tees off to the waste gate the comes up and goes in to the air intake just before the turbo.SO now im unsure where to put the T for the vac line for my boost guage if anyone can help that would be great.

mate, somewhere on the charge side of the turbo. if you dont have any threaded 'bungs' in your engine inlet plumbing (charge side), you need to tap into the wastegate hose. so my suggestion would be, take the longest hose off the wastegate actuator hose, and put your boost gauge hose in there and araldite it in, then blank the fitting in the inlet side of the turbo.

i have a T that came with the guage so are u saying put it between the waste gate and the T that goes to the turbo?

Why is there a line coming from after the turbo AND before turbo into the same boost pressure line to activate the wastegate ???
Won't one line have vac and the other pressure ??

If you had 1 line from after the turbo to wastegate actuator, then put your "T" in this line.

That setup is to increase boost pressure. The wastegate springs on those things are very soft hence the constant bleed off back to the vacuum side.

Best practice is never to read boost from a circuit that has a bleed off effect.

So ideally you will remove one of the boosted/charge pipes, drill and tap a 1/8th thread, screw in a fitting and read it from there.

Or I can send you out a decent fitting that can be used to read the boost from a hole in the rubber hose.
Ill try and get a photo of the fitting up tomorrow so you can see how it works.

With the system as pictured, if there is no restrictor in the hose to the intake side of the compressor, how do you get any boost control ? Surely all the air will bleed straight back to the inlet and not develop pressure on the waste gate actuator. In fact I feel all it would do is loose a degree of boost through the bleed hose.

How do you figure that?

The wastegate is pushed open by boost pressure. So any air bleeding away from it means it stays shut longer, increasing boost pressure.

How do I figure that ? Simple. If the size of the hole into the intake is the same size as the bleed from the compressor outlet i.e. no restrictor, then how can there be any pressure to act on the waste gate actuator.

Because the hole back to the intake can only flow a limited amount of air back to it. This increases the amount of pressure in the rest of the boost circuit.

Apart from that, if there were no pressure acting on the wastegate. It would stay shut resulting in very high boost levels.

Since you should have a boost gauge before you started playing with it, dosen't look like there is any adjustment if it's boosting too much/not enough.
Is there another part (bleed valve) that's not pictured to allow for this ?

thats how it was setup wen i bought it so thought id fit a boost guage to see wat sort of boost its running.

Swap Northside 4X4's fitting for the one in the intake pipe pre-turbo.
If I understand it correctly, it allows a little of the boost pressure to bleed off (back into intake so it's not lost) to make the wastegate actuator think it's not makeing as much boost, so will open later creating higher boost.
This will give you higher boost to what you have now (assuming the current fitting dosen't already have a flow restrictor in it).
IMO fit gauge first before you touch anything else.

BTW, the wastegate is a door on back side or inside the turbo that releases extra boost pressure. It opens at a factory set pressure to limit the amount of boost produced.

yeh im not interested in increaseing boost until i know wat boost it runs already thats y i want to know where i connect the boost guage

You just put that fitting in any of the turbo charges pipes. (after the turbo, but before the inlet manifold)
Preferably after the intercooler but it should only make .5-1psi difference anyway.

Just leave the bleed setup as is, trust me. It runs a perfectly safe level of boost for that motor. The only way to increase it further is by modifying the wastegate. Either my spacing it forward or putting a kink in the arm.

so between the turbo and intercooler in the intercooler pipe in the picture?
