Brother decided on a GQ - problems to look out for?

Post by TuffRR »

Ok, following on from the GU or GQ debate below, my brother has decided on a 4.2 diesel GQ. We are going out on Saturday to look at one. What are some common things to look out for on these vehicles? He is looking at something with pretty low kms (100,000ish).
Thanks.

SWB or Long?

Ones with Low klms are rare as rocking horse s h i t

first GQ was 88/89, and usual klms are 160,000+

usual things on any b4, check the underneath for bashes or mang marks

cracked floor pan when firewall and floor meet

cracked inner guards behind battery and opposite side

rusty rear side windows

cracked roof pillars at the windscreen

seat mounts

dual batterys look for ripped inner guards where the battery tray mounts

with body lifted cars, check for cracks around the body mounts

cracks in rear door where the top of the windows are

Autos are $4000 to rebuild, not sure on manuals.

just to name a few.

TD42's in this era mostly went to white fleets and can be had in the price range your brother is after most will be DX's.

Lots bought the 2.8TD as it was a cheap buy.......

I just bought a '96 LWB DX, 4.2D and I am very happy with it. Ex-Telstra and it really is very tidy and been looked after well.

fleet vehicles in the '95 to '97 will still have 150 - 250,000 ks on them. No worries if you are looking at a 4.2 diesel with good service history.

I may be mistaken, but I am sure that the factory 4.2 turbo D wan't released until the GU. The only turbos you will find in GQs are the factory 2.8TD and aftermarket kits. Personally, I would rather have a turbo fitted by a reputable company and the turbo of my choice, that way I know the condition it is all in and the way it has been treated. Also just because it has a turbo fitted doesn't mean it is going to be tuned or installed correctly... Note that TD42 is the Nissan designation for the naturally aspirated diesel engine... it isn't turboed.

Another thing to look out for is fatigued exhaust mounts.

The base DX didn't have split rear windows so rust isn't a problem there. Expect to pay $500+ to replace rusted out split rear windows... my old man had to do this :-(
