Ratio choice

Post by old lux »

Hey guys just about to install a pair or air lockers and about to do a ratio swap.
It's currently got 4.56 ratio in ATM but going lower. I want to go 5.29 but have seen a lot of people are running 4.88.
I am going to be buying nitro gears no matter what choice I go. It's never going on the hi way.
It's currently got a 2.8 turbo diesel motor and 33" tyres. I m going 35"s very soon. I m not doing T case gears so help is thanked in advance.

Cheers,
Old Lux

4.88 is very common cause it is a factory ratio out of a 84-88lux with a 4y. So people can buy them cheap second hand. If your spending the none I sugest the 5.29s

Thanks for that. Do anyone here use nitro gears? And how do they perform?

the lower you go with diff gears, the weaker they become, as there will be less teeth in contact. Maybe do some more research first? and decide if its likely to be a problem for your rig and if you really need 5.29's.

I pulled my centre out after around 1000kms and have alot of wear on the crownwheel on nitro 4.88's but I suspect it was the 4wd place that stuffed the install (south coast 4wd) gave them back the centre and now they are pulling it down again to try to find why.

But I believe it's installation error not the gears...

I got 4.55 and it's still not getting moving.with my 2.4 it struggled to wouldn't spin the 33" tyres in Hi range 4wd. When I went to a 2.8 made it better but when I go 35"s I will have the same problem. So I will have to upgrade to at lease 4.88 but because I don't want to do crawler gears yet was think ratios to give me a slower crawl still.

IMOP go with 4.88's not quite as low but you don't sacrifice too much strength.

4.88's put ratios and speedos back to original with 34's.

I run 4.88's and 32's on road and Its a pain in the ass having it Sitting on high revs on the high way.

Yer I will be running 35s more then likely for bush. And when it is on road on rare ocasioans it will be on 33s I don't plan on going crawler gears any time soon that's wat made me think go 5.29 then I have a slower crawl speed. I don't mind sacrificing hiway speed as I have a car trailer to tow it to places that are a fair bit away

I will be ringing locktup ank asking there opinion as I have had mixed results.my diff guy said go 5.29 a lot of you guys have said go 4.88 because it's a common ratio and a few have said go 5.29 since I m buying anyway

Thanks for your help

Ratios are ordered from locktup4x4. I ended up going 5.29 nitro gears. The last set they has. And even on special :P so I saved myself $44 each end. thanks for your input guys. it helped heaps and I value your opinion. Please keep it up.
