td42 best turbo
Re: td42 best turbo
Wouldnt be to bad GQ. Options out there that would match a td42 better, but in general it should do ok.
I am assuming you have this turbo already? Or can get one cheaply?

Yeah got one cheaply.Northside 4x4 wrote:Wouldnt be to bad GQ. Options out there that would match a td42 better, but in general it should do ok.

How would it compare to a HT18 ?
I currently have a HT18 running 12lbs with a fuel screw tune, but I have had a GQ pump rebuilt and modded.
I saw the figures on the pump and it flows 88cc ?? at 2000rpm with an 11mm plunger and governer ? mods .
I'm no expert so please excuse the lack of explanation.
Cheers,
Dan.
Re: td42 best turbo
ok finally got truck running for quick drive:
fueling untouched at the moment but have noticed so far the following:
throttle response is mint, hard to explain but feels like driving my old ls1 powered truck when it was up in the revs
Boast builds from 1000rpm and once reaches 2000rpm ramps insanely through to 20psi where its limited at the moment by wastegate
intercooler seems to have notably dropped egts with the truck as well as improved throttle response
So far very happy thing hauls right through to 4k going to slowly play with the boast and wind bit more timing and fuel in once have finished making everything is sweet, defininty mint compared to previous CT26 spools much quicker.

Re: td42 best turbo
just recently fully rebuilt my td42. brand new motor with turbo pistons, turbo cam vlt springs, balanced motor, custom pump done by mtq 11mm plunger with comp. custom extractor type high mount manifold. bolted on is custom jpc roller turbo 3 inch straight thru exhaust, fmic. goes very well, but not happy with power figures. was on 35,s what do you guys reckon??
Re: td42 best turbo
Am I reading your graph correctly.... was it done in 3rd gear, which it seems to show in the corner near the date...... my understanding is that dyno runs are usually done in top or fourth, depending on box (1:1 gearing through box) to try to even that part of it out for comparison purposes with other vehicles.....kipdog wrote:just recently fully rebuilt my td42. brand new motor with turbo pistons, turbo cam vlt springs, balanced motor, custom pump done by mtq 11mm plunger with comp. custom extractor type high mount manifold. bolted on is custom jpc roller turbo 3 inch straight thru exhaust, fmic. goes very well, but not happy with power figures. was on 35,s what do you guys reckon??
Show me the money..SHOW ME THE MONEY
Re: td42 best turbo
Seems pretty good.
If it goes well, dont worry about the power. Cant always compare dyno to dyno anyway.
Is it smokey? How much boost etc...
Getting to 470odd EGT after only a 3rd gear dyno run is really hooking along for the egt. At a guess that run would take all of 6seconds to complete...

Re: td42 best turbo
only running 20psi, it is only smokey when its under load, already received a epa letter but it goes pretty well as it still lifts 37,s around corners
Re: td42 best turbo
how do you find the jpc turbo you dont have a boost graph with the dyno run at all?
gq coil cab with stuff
Re: td42 best turbo
no i dont have a graph. ive used a few diffrent turbos before, and i reckon this one works awesome with the engine. it boost realy early and keeps going all the way.
Re: td42 best turbo
Under load is really where you dont want it to be smokey though.
Down low while its off boost is ok on something like yours, but up top ideally it should be quite clean.
This is why the EGT's are heading sky high really quickly.

Re: td42 best turbo
Edited to "I cannot follow rules"
Re: td42 best turbo
na its only smokey when its under wrong gear load say like i take off in second. under boost you can see the smoke slowly clear up to nothing.Northside 4x4 wrote:Under load is really where you dont want it to be smokey though.

Re: td42 best turbo
Bit of a contradiction there. If it goes really well why do the power figures matter?kipdog wrote:goes very well, but not happy with power figures. was on 35,s what do you guys reckon??

Awesome to hear some results when you tune it up. Sounds like the initial impressions are really promising. When I first convinced one of my brothers to try my big VNT on a TD42 (2005), with a Perkins Phaser based injector pump, juiced right up, the smoke started to clear at 1800 and was gone at 2000rpm, at which point the gearbox and engine tried to rotate in the Patrol and the boost needle flicked off the gauge (it was only a 20psi gauge at the time).
Out of interest, do you know the housing # on the CT26 you previously had? If its 420X0, then no wonder this spools better, almost anything will spool better than that housing on a 4.2 diesel.

Re: td42 best turbo
Will have a look at the CT26 and let you know hopefully over the next couple of weeks will wind some more fuel and boast in to the motor just finished 4x4 event in the weekend and had to tow the mates winch truck must admit egts are 100 to 150 degrees cooler with new turbo and intercooler so its looking promising at the moment and it tows good apart from being swb.
VNT sounds cool are you guys making your own control module based on RPM/load or can you get vacum operated setups?
Cheers Glen
