12ht 60 series vs 13bt bj74 both auto

Post by esp22 »

Hi how you guys doing?

Looking at getting either a 60series with 12ht or bj74 with 13bt both in manual

most of my driving will be around town i guess but when i get out most will be touring/camping/fishing/beach work...not too much hard 4wdriving anymore...will do some but mainly want to setup as a tourer

main users will be my partner and I. Im just stuck on which one would be better?

i know 12ht engines are weapons but are the 13bts?
What are the 13bts like getting to 100/110km/h??

Pro and cons of each?
Whats the fuel economey of a 13bt...ive heard some 12ht in 60s getting 10l/100km...so this is the dilemma
i guess sourcing parts for the 74 series would be wayyyyyy harder than for the 60 series but is it that much of an issue...are the parts more expensive??

Thanks

The 74 shares a lot of common parts with the 75 series... panels diffs etc

you could upgrade it to the 14bt as well

the only major gearbox difference is the bellhousing and inputshaft length in the manuals.. im honestly not sure on the differences in an auto between 6 and 4cyl

finding a good 60 series without rust is becomming a lot harder these days and for the price of an 80 series now that may be another option for you

another option is the 1pz varient.. run it till theres a problem then put a 1hz in it...

the 74 is a much smaller car than the 60. that should probably be the deciding factor.

13bt is a frugal engine. It's a smaller engine than the 12ht, and it's in a lighter car. so economy can be around 9-10 litres but it depends how you drive it and if there are hills where you live. Even the 3b is good for about 10litres/100k, slightly less than the 2h.

Both will be flat out holding 110kph on a big hill. Keep in mind power to weight is never on your side with an old 4wd. especially a diesel.

As mentioned the autos/diffs are essentially the same between both vehicles. IMO the main deciding factors are how much space and how many doors do you want.

I have a BJ74, 5spd running stock ratios, lots of boost and turned up fuel with 35'' tyres and I return ~690km to ~80L fuel daily driving and moving along pretty well. It will easily hole the speed limit up big hills etc. If it was running stock rubber it would be unstoppable on the road and use less fuel if you were not on the highway all the time.
