80 series diff (with bits)

Post by wreckingball »

So i was doing a bit of maintenance to the old girl the other day 80 series. When i checked the rear diff oil. and it looked a bit discoloured (grease from the wheel bearings due to leaky seals) so i drained it and wiped the magnetic bung which had a few metal filings and shock horror one small chip of metal about 3mm long and half a mil wide and deep. So i refilled it and regreased the wheel bearings and went for a drive . theres no noise or anything . the diff bearings were replaced in september. so what i want to know is should i be worried and pull it out to get it checked or just let it develop ??

any opinions would be great
cheers mark

If it dosen't have any "friends" still in the diff, worry about it if it starts to make some noise. If your woried about it, pull the rear centre it's easy in an 80.

if its only the one chip, and its a small one at that, dont let it worry you.

as said, you can pull the centre out and inspect it if you wish
