engine noises and hard to start with misfire???

Just wondering how noisy your engines are???
Mine has quite a lot of noise when cold, and gets better as it warms up. it sounds like lifters rattling, similar to tappets not adjusted properly on older cars?
It also take a few cranks to start and idles rough for the first 5 seconds or so.
finally, until warmed up it has a single stutter when you accelerate from idle. just a single miss as soon as you press the accelerator.

I wonder if these are all interlinked? I was wondering something like a lifter that is not pumping up properly, so it is hard to start until the oil pressure in the lifters is maintained?

or could it be something much better (or worse)

i just wondered has anyone else got this problem, and how much engine noise should they make?? you can hear mine 'tapping' away while idling and as you rev for the first few minutes of driving.

Mine is very quiet and you can hardly hear it, it also starts first go

the starting problem i thought may not be related, but when i first looked at and tested the car, it didnt do it, and it was very quiet.
the starting has gotten a little worse, as has the noise...

mine only has 81000kms. its a 92 feroza II sxp.

My first engine did that, at about 85000kms, it was a bit noisy and tappy, it also had some cold start problems. It would even stall if the revs dropped quickly.

I had the injectors cleaned and that fixed the whole problem.

My new engine is fine, but its only 60000km or so old.

goforit.... My experience with teh feroza is the tappets are very sensitive, and regularly need adjusting. I think you'll find the tappets need adjusting. Then a good tune up will get it right.

If you do it yourself, careful when you retighten the tappet cover. I broke two of em cause I overtighened the bolts.

that is something i was thinking it might be.......if the tappet clearances are so far out,. would that affect the starting until tolerances close up a little???

can you tell me what the clearances should be for it?

Yes it would effect starting and running. No I cant tell you clearances, but I think they are written on teh underside of the bonnet.

IMHO your better off getting a mech to do it. If you dont get them done, it can wreck your valves and have to get new ones. (from experience

its ok i should have read the service manual first......i found the values in that.
i have done plenty of tappets etc when replacing heads and rebuilding engines in the past, so I will do it myself this weekend and see how it goes.
