Think of the squelch as a gate. Open it right up and ALL the water comes through, close it and you hold a lot of water back and only let a trickle through. When the squelch is fully OPEN every noise or signal no matter how far away will be heard and is a pain in the earhole. Close the squekch up and you can edit out the background static and the far off signals (most are too difficult to hear and often even if you can hear them they cant hear your reply). This leaves you with the squelch about 1/4 closed, no background static and no crappy far off signals and a very quiet ride. When a signal from someoen close enough to be heard and talk to comes through it 'opens' the gate and lets the sound through to you.
Just be carefuk you dont close the squelch too much so that even a close up signal cant come through. Best idea is to start motor, open squelch fully and then slowly turn the knob until all the background static is stopped. This will then stay pretty much where you will leave the squelch for normal operations only really needing to change it if you are trying to gear a very weak signal...hope this helps
