1FZ and water (tests)

1FZ and water, they say sometimes get along and sometimes dont.

So for testing purposes, (this is my 1st 1fz), i was wondering how much water do you have to pour onto the engine (leads, dizzy) to find it will fail (hopefully not) a water crossing/mud hole?

ps. did that make any sense?

The problem spots I've found are the ignitor, distributer and throttle position sensor plug. They won't be a problem in a sucessful crossing but you do have to face the fact that no matter how much effort you put into water proofing it, petrol engines won't be as good as diesel and if you stop for some reason there is a good chance you'll need a tow out.

edit. the 105 has coil packs so they are a bit better off than the 80 series.

my old 1fz could literelly see a puddle and it would stop.. was a bugger of a thing till i worked out what it was..

If u look across the top of the dizzy cap then down the back (where the shaft comes out of the head) u will noticed a small hole in the perfect position to collect water and send it straight into the dizzy. Now if ur lucky urs will have a bung in it.. mine did not......

I glued a hose into this hole and utilized it as a breather.. worked very well. and if it did play up u could just squirt crc down the hole and it would clear up straight away.. I also think there is a hole underneath as well.

Crap... Why dont you ask cranky about his petrol engine and water. Petrol engines are every bit as good. The 1fz is a common water pig. And yes the 105 has coil packs. It took me a while with my 1fz but I got it completely water proof and crossed rivers well over my bonnet with a 5" lift, 2" body lift and 35's.

I have a turbo diesel now. But 1 trip a diesel took a gulp and ceased instantly because of compression. The petrol then went in to rescue it took a gulp aswell bent the piston and had a miss but kept on going.

Best advice I can give is breather like cranky said, Seal the ring with sica and pump it with possitive pressure (4 psi max). Get your leads hot and then spray them with silicone 808 (genuine toyota leads the best). The was 1 other thing but I cant remeber anymore.

Thanks guys. one of these days, engine cold, i will spray some water onto it and see if anything stops it.

Cranky, i have actually sealed those 2 holes on the dizzy when i rebuilt the engine. I wonder if there would be any condensation buildup with it fully sealed?
