Big tyre pressures on highway
Did a bit of a look but cant find anyone as silly as me..
We are currently driving from Tassie to Cape York and both our cars are running big tyres (well for the road) I've got 37" claws on my 80 ute and a mate is running 36x15 claws on his 105.
Have been running 35PSI for highway use, but have been wondering if its worth while running a bit more?
Cheers
Ray

i run 40 in my 35 mtz
Re: Big tyre pressures on highway
I ran 40 in my 35 claws once, handling was much better than the 36 I normally run for hiway. But I am concerned that it may lead to wearing the center of the tread prematurely.

Re: Big tyre pressures on highway
All those numbers sound high to me.
On my vehicle that weighed 1780kg with 35x12.50R15 tyres (Maxxis Trepadors) I ran anywhere about 22-24PSI for City Driving and 24-28PSI When I was going on long trips (Highway Driving)
On my other vehicle, a Defender 110 the tyre placard states 28PSI front and 42PSI rear with 235/85R16 tyres. That works out about 31.5".
Luke.
PS. I definately noticed the fuel economy on highway drives with my Jeep tyres at 28PSI compared to 22PSI.

I wish you luck with the qld fuzz.
Re: Big tyre pressures on highway
They are pretty strick but you'll be fine. First time is one point and $100 unless you get a Department of Transport member. I'll lend you some roadworthy tyres for an inspection if they catch up with you in Brisbane. Jealous of your time off Cranky! I have looked into transporting my car to Cairns to save some time. Transport would be $1700 so maybe $700 more than driving but would give me more time at the top before returning to work hoping to go this time next year.
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.

Re: Big tyre pressures on highway
35" claws on 10" wide rims (these are my road tires) I always run 40psi, my last set of claws lasted 70000km .
A good tip for driving interstate (well everywhere really) is to keep your 4by clean when your on the highways (it's hard sometimes as a car wash isn't at every fuel stop) and have a good set of mud flaps (I take mine off when wheeling).
Have a great trip.

You can put you car on the train in brissy and travel on the train, its a 2 day trip.SCANAS wrote:They are pretty strick but you'll be fine. Cranky I was running 40 psi in my 35's, the middle is starting to wear out quicker so have dropped to 36. A few thousand K's wont kill them but

Re: Big tyre pressures on highway
I had 18 psi on the 37 treps ran it like that for a short while (no bagging whatsoever although I had temp flat spots for the first 5 mins of driving out of the garage) I pumped them up to 40 and went on a long highway trip. Not sure if the increase in psi made a difference but I started showing signs of centre wear after I did it, and it was a much harder ride but no flat spots in the morning. I'm going to drop them back down, will go to 30 psi and see how it goes. On my old 315/75 BFG mt's I ran it at 40 psi on the road and they lasted a long time and many long hwy trips so not sure which is going to be best.
Re: Big tyre pressures on highway
I ran 22psi front and 18 rear on my GQ ute on road, a bit less on the 36's. The wide ones 15.5 wide do wander.
