Should i Plate this?

Post by georgey »

Hey guys

S0 currently my Hilux looks like this....
Image

Do you think i should fish plate the whole chassis from the chassis number forwards?
Im thinking Yes,but someone has said to me fish plating creates a heat affected zone where the welds are and has a high chance of cracking,Ive never heard of this has anyone else?

thanks for the advice

what are your plans for the truck.
depending on the useage as plating it can weigh a fair bit.
if u weld it correctly then the weak spot becomes where the plating stops.

Thanks 80_delirious.

Plans for the truck are coilovers and LS1,Shoock hoops and custom mounts will pretty much be the only thing welded to the chassis other than a new front crossmember,it will have a front bar and winch though.

no worries. happy to help :finger: :D

with the mods you list in your second post, I would say you will need to fish plate it.

going from leaves to coil overs completely changes the loading and the stresses on the chassis. Look how skinny a leaf sprung Lux chassis is compared to a coil sprung cruiser or patrol, it is mostly due to suspension design.

search some of the members threads to see how SAS conversions have been plated. fish plating might cause stress risers, but not plating it with the mods you have listed will see it fail anyway

Exactly what i was thinking.
with the torgue twist from the ls1 it would put alot of stress on both sides of the chassis.
Off to buy some 3mm plate tomorrow then :)

Just get an 80s chassis. If you are redoing the engine mounts - you might as well throw in a few body mounts, get coils, stronger diffs, transfer etc

Why would i want coils when im buying coilovers?
think itll be alot cheaper and easier to just fish plate it.

My vote is to put a cage on it. That will strengthen the chassis.
Then only fishplate localised zones that you think may fail. IE. Where the cage feet meet the thin chassis.

Cage won't brace chassis where the coilovers & engine mounts are tho, so fish plate it like your going to.

it will be fish plated 800mm back from the front crossmember and it will be caged anyway.

I am sorry, I can usually smell coilovers ha ha.

Just don't ask bluebear to box his chassis
