Discos
I have driven a 4.2 EFI, 4 inch lifted GQ on 33's for 6 years now and love it. After 330,000km its cracked the head. No big deal and will be back on the road in no time BUT in this Patrol down time i have been looking at Discos on carsales.
Why is such a feature packed 4wd so cheap?? Are they really that unreliable?
It looks like that for under $10k you can get a nice late 90's early 2000 V8 Disco with relatively low km.
What are these things like to tour in? Reliable? What is the V8 like on fuel (my patrol used 22L/100km at the best of times but is on lpg). When off road i'm used to driving the patrol fairly hard and have never had anything break but i don't mind changing driving style to suit. What are the drive lines in these like? Can they handle 31's or 33's.
Also interested in a diesel.
I would seriously consider having one as and using it as a daily and camping trips.
Cheers
Jimmy

GQII Patrol YAY!!
Re: Discos
They are great.
Fuel economy will be about the same (if not better).
The drive line is not as strong. The diffs are the weak point.
Driven very sensibly 33s will be OK (getting them to fit is the other part of the equation).
They are no more nor less reliable then any other vehicle of the same vintage sporting similar specifications.
You do get a lot of vehicle for the money, specially with the D2.
D1s are ridiculously cheap these days but finding one thats been well cared for at the right price is proving more & more difficult.

hey jimbo
I am a recent landrover convert i picked up myself a series 1 V8 for 4K with twin lockers Soo Cheap. the old guy did not know what the lockers were and had never used them!
anyway i run standard 29" tyres and can easily out wheel my mate who has 33/12.5 mt on his gu.
Landrovers flex awesom stock the rear has an a frame set up stock and they also achieve good front end flex.
Driving position is as good if not better than a GQ.
only let down has been parts, they can be expensive but shop in the UK and you can get most things l;anded at your door step for less than half price.
Cheers

We've had out TDi Disco for 5000Kays so far with not a hint of trouble (i know its not very long ), stock, other than a 2" lift and 265 AT's it out wheeled our locked pajero on muddies.
WAAAAAAY nicer to drive than my lowered camry
Can see out of it like a bastard, the window line comes to my waist, no need for half doors here!
not alot of room in the back but a D2 has more.
Handles the black stuff like a dream, can hook a 75Kph corner in excess of 100 and feel 100% safe.
The Box-Kite Paj: Gone...
Now: 96 TDI Disco, 2" Lift, 265's and a leaky windscreen...

Re: Discos
Just to ad on parts cost for disco's, i've never had any problems with expensive parts, always found them to be similar if not cheaper than any other 4wd. parts are abit more expensive for later model d2's but still not excessive imo.

Re: Discos
Thanks for the replies people.
I would probably be looking for D2 V8 on gas or Diesel. I have managed to tour in the gq on lpg with no problems but the range of a diesel would be great.
Jimmy
PS: Will be hard letting go of the GQ. 330,000km and i have replaced the starter $120, Alt $200 and front control arm bushes $200 ans now an engine $1000.

Re: Discos
Been a landrover convert for a number of years now, wouldn't go back to a nissan or toyota. If you shop around parts aren't badly priced. You'll get 33's under a D1 with a bit of lift & guard trim a D2 2" lift will fit 33's/285 easy.

You didn't just fall out of the ugly tree you were gangbanged by the whole f@#&ing forest
Re: Discos
i've had a 94 D1 V8 for nearly two years now. it's great car and i don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. for touring i would like to have a diesel D2, but for weekend trips, you get a lot of bang for buck with a D1. i'm in the process of fitting 33s, with just 2" lift and much guard cutting. pretty happy with the car. i'm getting around 17-18 L/100km.
hey starky, weren't you selling off your lockers? wanna swap your locked front 3rd member for my open one?
