Hi, Ive just swapped a 60 series five speed gearbox with a hj47 transfer case bolted onto it into my hj47 troop carrier. It was all very simple and works great even the hand brake cable fitted perfectly but the only problem I have is the original speedo cable is too short by about 20mm. Ive looked into getting a cable from a 5 speed bj42 but it seems to be the same length as the 4 speed cable.
Does anybody know if a 60 series cable will fit or am I going to have to try to lengthen it some how?

I used my original cable when I did the 4 speed to 5 speed swap. You should get the length you need by re-routing the cable more efficiently so undo the clips holding the cable, plug it in and then see where you can clip/cip tie the cable safely.
Re: Hj47 5 speed swap speedo cable
Thanks Ray,
Thats exactly what I did in the end. I spoke to toyota and they told me the longest one they had was 2450mm long so I pulled mine out and measured it and it was exactly the same. It didnt take long to find a better route. Saved my $175.
I took it out for its maiden voyage thisafter noon and it goes great. With the 4speed it used to sit on 3000 rpm at 100kph but now it does 2400 which is a lot more comfortable however when im in my hj61 at 100kph the engine is only doing 2100rpm. So I couldnt help but be a little disapointed. I wonder if I lost a few rpm's by using a hj47 transfer case.

Re: Hj47 5 speed swap speedo cable
Yeah probably due to slightly different gearing in the transfer case, tyre size difference between the 2 vehicles and possibly one or both speedometers out of calibration. So you used the 4 speed transfer behind the 5 speed, I didn't think they bolted up. Was that just to retain the transfer handbrake?
Re: Hj47 5 speed swap speedo cable
I didnt think they would bolt together either so I was a bit sceptical when I bought this one off ebay. The guy said it was put together by a mechanic up nambour way and there are a few tricks but its not difficult. I would have prefered a 60 series transfer and I got one off ebay but it was junk. I found not having to move the hand brake a real bonus. Oveall Im happy with it. I really need to bend the gearstick a little however. The problem I like the late model stick which is much thicker than the earlier ones and have some kind of rubber joint in them I guess to reduce vibation. The problem is if I heat it up with the oxy it will just melt. Any ideas?
Re: Hj47 5 speed swap speedo cable
I dont have any real tips for your gear-stick problem, however there are 3 different configurations of top cover plate on the earlier landcruiser 5 speed gearboxes. Basically the 40 series 5 speed had the hole in the cover plate further forward than the 60 series (making the gear stick closer to the fire-wall) I have swapped 2 of these over with no troubles, but I'm pretty sure i swapped a late 75 series (92-98?) top with an 84 model 60 series top.
That's my 2c, but I would love to know if anyone can tell me what needs to be done to swap back to a 4 speed transfer case (with the drum handbrake) of my 84 model 60 series 5 speed. I've been a bit unsure on how to resurrect a handbrake in my 40 and the transfer swap would be by far the easiest way out.

Re: Hj47 5 speed swap speedo cable
I've found the guy that did it on my gearbox and he says it's not that difficult. It's a matter of swapping the rear half of the 47 transfer onto the front half of the 60 transfer. The hard part is to remove the 47 output shaft with the hand brake drum and installing it into the 60 transfer. If I give him the two boxes he says he can do it for about $500 but if it needs bearings etc it will cost more. I reckon if you have a decent puller you could do it yourself quite easily. I can post his details but I'm not sure if it's against the rules here or not to recommend businesses.
Re: Hj47 5 speed swap speedo cable
Hi,
the hj47 rear drum brake assembly should be interchangeable with a 60's series drum setup - the one with the handbrake
So just grab a complete rear drum setup from a 60's series and bolt it all on. Make sure you grab the handbrake cable and mech etc while you're there. Then you don't have to stuff about with the POS drum transfer handbrake and you'll actually have one that works!
