LPG vs Diesel

Post by AussieJK »

Hi all,

I currently own a jeep but am looking at getting a GU for touring duties and some trail fun on the odd ocation. Will prob have 35-37s no bigger.. My question is what is going to be better for me...? Will the cheapness of running a LPG fuel set up be on pair or have simalar running cost of the more efficent diesel engine? I am aware that as you get in some rural ares LPG is harder to get this isn't a worry for me so rule that out? I would like to hear from both sides to compare for myself.

Thanks for your input.

All depends on the fuel consumption you can get out of a GU fitted with a gas system.

Generally somewhere around 26l/100 with chunky tyres and a bit of gear in the truck on gas.
Around 14-15l/100 on diesel for a similar spec car.

Guess all you would have to do is a bit of maths depending on the price of fuel in your area.

Second point is. The diesels are very easy to mod and up the power of if you choose to.
With a Petrol/Gas car your limited to basically Exhaust/Intake, cam, ecu tuning, gains around 10-20kw, Cost probably around $5-7K

With a TD42, turbo, intercooler, exhaust, intake etc...Gains of over 80% in power and torque with intercooler, ehxuast and turbo. Cost around $7K

ive had gas cars (not a patrol specifically) and a diesel patrol and hilux.

Personally i hated the gas cars - 1 your stopping to fill up every few hundred k's and since range is low and it might be even 70-80km between stations you find yourself filling up early to be safe and it wears thin.

my gas cars were a shit to start and never left me feeling confident, it went onto a truck a few times - gas mixers etc dying.

both diesel cars ive had have kind of just worked - they always get me home. range is better running costs are similar yes they cost more if they stuff up but really not many do.

offroad diesels are a ok with water - gas CAN be more problematic.

personally diesel all the way but the price will be much more to buy.
