Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters. Same company so same quality?
Hiya gents,
After reading a previous post about oil filters and doing some research it seems Ryco, Cooper and Wesfil are owned by the same parent company, GUD.
http://www.gud.com.au/ryco-wesfil-goss
I always thought Ryco were better then Cooper/Wesfil but now it's got me wondering if they are the same quality?
According to their website Wesfil/Cooper oil filters have anti-drain back and bypass valves which I now Ryco has as well.
http://www.wesfil.com.au/page/products
Considering Ryco oil filters are more then double the price of equivalent Cooper filters, are Ryco filters using their name to demand the premium price? Is the filter material/quantity the same? Wesfil also warranty their products http://www.wesfil.com.au/page/about_us
I've heard both good & bad stories about Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters so it can go either way.
Cheers

Re: Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters. Same company so same quality
Last week I was at S&B "the right workshop" in Rydalmere (one of my stops as a snappy dealer) and they were cutting open about 40 common filters with a repco and super crap rep there to see exactly what they looked like on the inside. they were looking for how well they are made and how big the filter was and how good the paper was inside. (S&B uses Ryco on 90% of all there jobs)
They found that most factory filters had a lot more paper inside them but the paper quality was very thin and not doubled up like most of the other filters.
The ryco filters had the best filters inside but in the last 2 years they have seen a few have leaks from the fold seem at the base of the filters.
The cooper had a lot of paper and it was doubled over but it had a lot less in it then the others and the filter it self was smaller.
The supercrap one only had a single paper in it but it was a bigger filter inside.
The wesfill was exactly the same as the cooper inside.
The repco brand was surprisingly good it had doubled filter paper a bigger filter inside then most and no one had anything bad to say about it.
Over all even the super crap guy admitted the Repco and Ryco filters were the best on the shelf. We all also agreed for the common get around town daily driver the repco filter is fine for anything more the Ryco would be first on the list.
They are going to put all the filters up on a self to see inside them some time this week at the workshop and at the local repco.

Re: Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters. Same company so same quality
If you want the best filters, buy Donaldson, Fleetgard, Mahle or Mann Filter.
Ryco are not the best quality by a long way, and are basically unknown as a filter manufacturer outside AU and possibly ZA.
You can't tell how good the filter media is by cutting open a filter and looking at it. You can get some idea of the manufacturing quality though.

So so true.... although good manufacturing quality is at least reassuring that the rest of the design might be ok.
( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Purolater appear to get really good reviews over in the US. I might try some of them. On Amazon they're only about $6 plus postage. I'll be using Shipito with some other stuff so shouldn't be too hexxy.

I can allways make sukura ,ac delco ,baldwin ,wesfill/cooper heaps cheaper and put a fair effort into not selling ryco unless i have to

Purolator are owned by a joint venture between MANN Filter and BOSCH - they should be reasonably good quality (probably better than Repco etc.)TheOtherLeft wrote:Purolater appear to get really good reviews over in the US. Re: Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters. Same company so same quality
I will give you my back ground so that what I am saying has a bit of weight. I have a advanced diploma in engineering and am a former empoloee of Ryco. You are right in saying that it is not conclusive just to eye ball the inside of a filter. Things that you cant tell are the micron rating of the filter and the thinkness, these have a very large bearing of how a filter performs. As far as wesfil and Ryco been the same filter with different stickers you couldnt be further from the truth. I know for a fact that they have different suppliers and that wesfill is pretty much only a sales office with no engineers where Ryco has made filters for about 70 years and even though they dont make any in house they still have engineers that design the filters as well as test them and other filters for performance. While wesfil are a good brand they are not at the same standard as the Ryco. As for the seam leaking problem there were two problems that caused it. The first one was the South African supplier had the sealing compound changed on them by their supplier with out thier knowladge and there for didnt pass that info on to the Ryco engineers. they now do not use that suplier. The other problem happened when a indo supplier changed the process used to apply the sealent with out telling Ryco. Contract breach any one. they now have a bloke has the job of running audits on all suppliers and makign sure they are doing the right thing.
I hope i coverd it all.

Re: Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters. Same company so same quality
What did the management tell you and who was it? You cna just use initials if you dont want to post names. Unfortunatly it was a case of two problems that had the same leaking point. Could have happened to any filter company really.
Re: Ryco/Cooper/Wesfil filters. Same company so same quality
Well mate im certainly not going to drop everyone in it
But it seems ryco lies all the time and keep getting caught
first i had 1 customer who had 4 vehicles leaking all the same place on thie filter then ryco saying it was a local problem then more in total 4 customer 3 of which were after the 2nd recall

I am going to agree with you on the misinformation thing. The blokes upstairs do tend to spin a bit when it hits the fan. I would be interested in who gave you your info, PM me if you want.
At the end of the day there are a lot of good and bad filters out there. All you need to ask your self is who do you believe will back you if somthing goes wrong. Because when you wanufacture something in the millions something is bound to.
