G'day mate, welcome to the forum.

Assuming the locking tabs been folded over the nut, the nut can't come loose. If the bearings were new, they may get a little loose as they're run in. This is the reason for running some preload on the wheel bearings.

I'm guessing that the bearing races were not fully installed to the stops. Pull the hubs off and make sure the races are seated and the bearings haven't flogged out then reinstall them with some bearing preload. If the nuts are gauged from using a chisel, grind the sides flat. Make sure to bend the tabs over a couple of sides of the nut and you should be sweet.

hi
if a cold chisle and hammer were use to remove nd install the lock nuts instead of a hub socket, then chances are when the lock nut gets tightned up the lock washer picks up on the sharp burs that are left from the chisle and it spins wich shears the little locating tab off therefore even if u fold the tab over the lock nut isnt actually locked, wich then comes loose and walah theres ur probeb.

my advice is remove both nuts and use a file or flap disc on a grinder to smoothen out bothe sides of both nuts untill all sharp bits and gouges are removed then refit it together with a new locking washer and apply a lick of grease to oth sides of the lock washer to reduce the chanc of the nut picking up, and use a proper Hub socket to tighten the nuts instead of butchering it with a chisle.

i used to have the same problem untill i changed the way i do them and havnt had a dramer since
hope this helps

cheers pickels

later model gq's (like my '99 ute) locking ring on wheel bearings is another ring with grub screws to hold it tight. i haven't had a problem since i've put in new new bearings and i think is a better system than the tab system. lep
