Hi Guy's,
A newbie here, having problems with my 89 hj75 gearbox. Unable to get a smooth shift from 1st to 2nd and can't go 3rd to 2nd all other options work ok. Initial thought is the selector but not sure. Any thoughts?

1st and 2nd synro's are a 1 piece unit. To me it sounds like the 1st/2nd syncro/hub is knackerd mate.
There not cheap also. You would prolly be up for around $500 for the hub plus extra for fitting it (you have to pull the whole gearbox down to replace just the one part) It can be a costly exercise mate, so it might be worth your while finding a good second hand box

Assuming you have checked your gearbox oil levels?
Try changing gearbox oil to Castrol VMX-M (exactly how I wrote it, NOT VMX80). It may improve the situation enough for you to get more use out of it until you can afford/find a deal on a replacement box/transfer.

And be aware lots of boxes are interchangeable. So don't shell out big bucks for a 75 box when a 60 box will fit etc... I think even petrol 60's have the same box as HJ60/75 ? Anyone confirm? You can buy a box and case 2nd hand for under $500

Pretty much all 60 series and early 70 series H55F boxes are interchangeable EXCEPT for the 4cyl models.

The top plates might be different between the 60 and 75.

80% sure 60 and 73 top plates are the same so I would assume 75 would be ok too. HJ47 is further forward though.

Then you also have the obvious issue of some later model 60 series transfers being vacuum shift. Solvable but better off getting a manual shift if yours was not vacuum operated.

Hi,
Yes the 60 series & 75 series boxes are the same & as for the vaccum change on the 60's it's only matter of unbolting it them bolting manual stick arrangement on

It's also i good idea to replace the seat and bush on the gearstick and check the 2x locating pins in the top housing they come loose if the gearstick is sloppy then all those bits are buggered.
Change the oil also like suggested and check the T/fer level the seal between the g/box-t/fer does go you can fix it with a by-pass hose.
Also check your clutch movement and adjustment do the simple things before wasting cash on a g/box and then have the same problem.
