td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
hey.
bought a fuel pump off a mate who had it modded with a 14mm plunger.
he doesn't know the specs of it other than the plunger size. but i spoke to the guy who got this pump built for my mate and all he could tell me was it was pumping out around 170cc of fuel. i dont think he wanted to give out to much info.
i'm running a gt2871bb turbo and a top mount cooler 450x300 and can't get the egts under control. i won't take it passed 550c but it shoots up so quick and doesnt look like its going to level out any time soon. but i haven't had it tuned since i put it all together.
he recommend that i sell the pump and get either a standed or a 12mm pump. unless i wanted to spend the money on a bigger turbo gt30xx and a good water to air intercooler pluss modd the manifold.
do i need to put a bigger turbo on or will i be able to run that turbo and intercooler plus a tune and get the egts under control?
will modding just manifold be worth while?
will i just be wasting my time trying to get this set up to work without the right size cooler and turbo?
any info would be great thanks, lozz

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
12mm plunger pumps can make more fuel than that. Is your turbo a t2 64 rear housing they cause alot heat an pressure due to being so small. How much boost u running 170cc you would want to be running 30psi or more , how much off boost fuel is it running. Theres a fair few factors in it.

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
im runnig 16psi at the moment as i was told the gt28 couldn't handle more than 20psi. it is t2 .64 exhaust housing. i don't know how much fuel it is running off boost.

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
with that sort of fuel load you would need 28psi and up to keep egt's under control and a good intercooler at a bare minimum
Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
A billet wheel garret turbo will provide much better flow than your current offering.
As for spoolup, I was able to achieve 30+psi by 2100rpm with our custom setup and much leaner fuel ratios than a 28/76 could provide with a bigger exhaust housing.
Also killed it by 20-30kw throughout the spoolup range. Very impressive for a larger turbo with superior flow.

Also, ditch the topmount for a front mount or water to air.
water/meth injection will kill those egt's quicksmart. 50-100deg drop in temps quite easily achievable.

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
That turbo is an absolute pile of crap for anything over 120cc of fuel or 18 psi of boost. At 170cc if it's that high you need 30plus psi of boost to burn it to start with let alone egt control!
The intercooler is way too small for capable power at 170cc, BIG top or front mount!
Off boost fuel should be no higher than 70cc for good low down afr control unless you have a really good turbo. As tye has said there are far better combos out there for fuel pumps and I doubt if your engine has the ability to even burn 170cc. 14mm head and rotors are not good for revs or reliability as they use huge cam plates for slow revving cummins engines.
Tye : how are your egt's with that turbo I built for you with 180cc

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
Was really good matt was probably running 160 to 170 cc had a few surge issues but could have been easily fixed. Egt post turbo were lucky to c over 500 I have since sold the car an starting over again with a td42 wagon so expect a call when finish my intercooler set up .

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
unfortunately i didn't know the specs of the pump when i bought it and was hoping for a decent power increase but nothing over the top. wish i got the pump checked out before buying the gt28. the guy who had the pump made for my mate said he is getting close to 300whp with the same pump and the right size turbo and intercooler.
if i spend the money on a decent water to air intercooler and the right size turbo will the engine still have reliability? its not going to be reliable in the way it is now.
would i be better off just getting a smaller pump? i am going to put a water to air on it anyway i just put the top mount on at the time cause i had it laying around.
thanks for the info, lozz

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
Yeh depends wat condition ur engines in. but they cope fine with big boost just watch ur egts an exhaust manifold pressure.alot of water to airs coolers on the market are shit choose carefully or run a air to air front mt less parts an reliable. But thats just my opinion.

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
wound the boost up on the weekend to 20psi took it for a quick run around the block. egts don't climb anywhere near as fast as they did before. in 4th gear it starts to slow down nearly to a stop but it will still go past 550. the reason i didnt go for a front mount was because i didn't have enough room due to the winch.
i was thinking about going for a frozen boost water to air intercooler. are they any good? does anyone have a better recomendation?
and maybe go a gt30xx for the turbo unless there is a better suited turbo?
thanks for the info, lozz

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
If u cant fit a front mt may be hard to fit the hit exchanger frozen boost ones are rd 3' thick. Think laminova would be the go they get a good wrap you can buy kits 4 $500 to make your own. As for turbo ring rd garrets arent allways the best.

where can i buy a laminova kit for that price?tye1986 wrote:If u cant fit a front mt may be hard to fit the hit exchanger frozen boost ones are rd 3' thick. Think laminova would be the go they get a good wrap you can buy kits 4 $500 to make your own.

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
it is a kit i thinks its just 4cores with the end caps and o rings then you have to design and fab up the outside of the cooler try googling it but i will text me mate to see were he got it from.

Re: td42 fuel pump 14mm plunger
Your intercooler is proberly a bit small, but you could put a bit more boost in it.
I run 24psi with my 2871 and its fine.
