plasma winch rope Vs UV/dry heat

Post by uninformed »

hey all,

how is plasma fairing against long term exposure to UV and dry heat? I have a mate that lives out west and is thinking about Plasma for a touring vehicle he is building up. He wonders how it will fair out there in the dry heat....it seems to kill anything plastic or rubber and not even in direct sunlight.

what are the better quality brands?

does anyone have a short lenght (like half a meter) they could give me to send to him to leave out in the sun and see how it goes?

cheers,
Serg

Sure, am happy to only run 49m of plasma to satisfy your curiosity..... :finger:

Try calling somewhere like ProComp in Melb, I'm sure they will send you 1/2 a meter for $10 so you can check it out.

Serg - the rope shouldn't be exposed to much UV - unless he has a high mount fitted on top of the bar or in his tray???

My plasma has been fitted for over a year and has spent most of that time in dry, hot WA conditions, which would be similar to western QLD. It also spent about 6 months before that in the shed.

Wire will certainly last longer though.

Only the top layer or rope (maybe 2m) on the drum will be directly exposed to UV. I'd imagine dry heat would be the perfect conditions for keeping a rope in good condition.

It'll vary on brand / model / quality.

The proper original Plasma - Puget Sound stuff is built for marine towing - plenty of UV there.

I looked at that.....not much feed back in the USA on Vectran, which according to their website is superior to their plasma....

so what are the good brands in OZ?

yes sure plasma dosnt like heat, rocks, mud, sand, ect but look at how its been tested on comp rigs
eg:- on an average winch comp you should use the winch about 20 to 30 times, then multiply that by
3 to 4 comps a year that averages out to about 100 uses per year, I used to keep my comp rope for about 2 years
then retire it as a backup rope or winch extension rope.
now the average tourer/4wder might use there winch 3 to 10 times a year & now where near as ruff or with out care
for the rope like us comp guys do/did.
Just look after the rope. I take mine off after each major use (comp ect) & wash it, this gets the sand & grit out of the fibers
the sand & grit will friction cut your rope from the inside out then put it back on.
Im at TJM COOPERS PLAINS Briz, yes we sell winches & rope, come to the store & Ill tell you more.
DONT FORGET !! FORUM MEMBERS GET DISCOUNTS ON TJM PRODUCTS FROM PIGGY.
